If not for Youtube ...

It makes you wonder how we existed before Youtube. You can learn how to build (and play) a guitar, how to make a spotwelder from an old microwave oven, build a hydro electricity generator from a washing machine, learn a language, research history, watch a movie..... and then there's the funny dog videos.

As long as you ignore the sub-continental con artist click bait where they pretend to make electricity from cheap bits and pieces.

If the morality idea that we have an Angel on one shoulder and a Demon on the other to either guide us to acceptable behaviour, or tempt us to go the other way, then we could apply the same to Youtube, and the Internet as a whole.

Asimov hinted at this when he created the character MULTIVAC, a mainframe computer accessible by terminal, originally operated by specialists using machine code and later by any user, and used for directing the global economy and humanity's development. Asimov's depiction of Multivac has been seen as the defining conceptualization of the genre of computers for the period of the 1950s -1960s. The concept – that all information could be contained on computer(s) and accessed from a domestic terminal – constitutes an early reference to the possibility of the Internet.

I rather think Asimov modelled Mulitvac upon the concept of a more reliable universal God. One that would guide society more consistently than the present imaginary one(s).

A godlike presence that actually answers questions.

An accessible source that would remove the corruption that society suffers at the hands of governments and religions.

As such, the internet that we have has failed. Mostly because it has an infinite number of unverifiable "information" inputs.

Ps. I just mistyped and autocorrect created "informatoon".  Was that an A.I. spoonerism?

How to shellac a fence?

How to make a good curry?

How to make a 24 volt power supply?

All very recent things I personally have looked up lately....  I reckon its great, but I agree there is a lot of nonsense out there. Try looking up perpetual motion stuff to see some.

YooToob is a very accurate representation of the world at large. 5% useful information, and 95% time-wasting, useless, self-promoting crap. A large proportion of just the voices (or the soundtrack) of the video-makers, are simply annoying or grating.

It never ceases to interest me how 95% of YooToob video producers - even the ones trying to be informative, spend 90% of the video time with the camera focused on their face, while they talk - instead of focusing on the project or item.

Then, when they finally turn to the project or item, they shove their hand in the way of the camera lens, thus hiding the precise detail they set out to explain!

Often the comments are more enlightening than the presentation.. It's ONLY one person's idea. I like Paul Bertorelli but have not agreed about twice with what he's posted and that's a fair % OK..A lot is just self-promotion $#!t. really and sometimes dangerous and misleading.. I admit I do expect a high standard with things like flying, engines etc."Everybody makes mistakes" doesn't fly with flying   Nev

I made a mistake  !.

I thought I could fly  !.

I am a heavy use of youtube.  I think when you have specific interests you soon learn to sort the wheat from the chaff.  Also if you watch enough videos on the same subject you start to be able see points that are widely agreed and those points on which people have different views.  Back in the day if you wanted to know something you  probably went to the library and borrowed  what may well be the only book on a particular subject. This book may also be 5, 10 or more years old and perhaps out of date.  Any disagreement on the information really needed another book to present opposing facts or opinions.

I have 383 you tube channels that I subscribe to.   Many of these have petered out and occasionally I clean house and cull some of the lesser watch channels.

In my area of work there are fanatic channels covering music theory, analysis and techniques.

Another thing I like about youtube is the learning journey you can find yourself on.   Searching for a video on diagnosing the noise in the bearings of my bike I find myself watching videos on cycling generally and then bike infrastructure and before soon I know the fascinating  history of why most Dutch people ride bikes and then videos about  planning  people friendly cities and the history of the US highway system.

Some areas on youtube are more likely to contain a higher percentage of rubbish for example medical information but there is nothing new in this, there have always been rubbish books on diets or alleged cures for various maladies.

I am in the Octave camp, but recently have slowed down my use of it. The areas of my go to are IT technology, business, investing, finance, flying, politics, travelling, cultures/anthropology, music, environment, AFL, and some engineering. If course, when I need to do a job around the house, I YT it, and then decide a professional is the order of the day 😉

I subscribe to about 100 publishers, but probably regularly view content published by about 10 of those. I will view content of others (and those I don't subscribe to) if the content looks like to will reveal something new. For example, for online commerce, a lot of content providers regurgitate the same old thing in different words. I too, cull my subscriber list every so often as well.

@Old Koreelah - I noticed you were confused at yet another sad attempt of humour above. The stats I gave came from here:

Obviously if the remainder are neither male nor female, they must be aliens.

Only 30 or so subscriptions for me, but I watch every day. It has cleared up things I have wondered about all my life. Such as ancient civilisations, now I believe the conventional archeologists 100% because I know how thoroughly they work. The ratbags who say otherwise I can now ignore, and no longer waste time on.
