Not a silly sign, but I can't find anywhere else to posy this.

I'm having some packaged crumbed fish for dinner. On the front it says that the fish is 100% wild caught and snap frozen at sea. And in a little dialogue box it says Packed in Australia from at least 40% Australian ingredients.

So who filleted and crumbed it?

The fish is New Zealand in origin ("hake" or more correctly "blue grenadier" - a merluccid hake of the family Merlucciidae), and the "40% Australian content" is the crumbed coating and the flours used in it, the oil it was cooked in, and the additional chemical ingredients in the coating mix. It appears they even used leftover ("spent") grain from beer-making, in the fish coating.

The hake was probably filletted on board the fishing mothership, and the snap-frozen fillets are then transferred to the factory in Australia, where it is then cooked and packaged.

"INGREDIENTS: New Zealand hoki fillets (57%), water, wheat flour, canola oil, wheat starch, maize flour, rice flour, salt, thickener (1400), maize starch, acidity regulator (450, sodium bicarbonate), milk protein, maltodextrin, natural colour (turmeric, paprika oleoresin), beer extract (contains barley), sunflower oil, yeast extract.

Contains milk, fish, wheat and barley.

Packed in Australia from at least 40% Australian ingredients."

Like the photo pasted on Facebook of a package of "Plant-based Mashed Potato". The poster said "Of course it is plant based." But commenters wrote that ordinary mashed potato contains milk and butter, which vegans don't wish to eat. Presumably 'plant-based' infers that those ingredients are not present.

Surely that must be fake.

Actually - no!  It's real - https://www.uranusgeneralstore.com/

They have products like "I love Uranus" mugs and box sets with "A Taste of Uranus" and "Fudge Packer Favourites".  Based in Uranus, Missouri.

Yanks with a sense of humour.  Who would have thought!
