pmccarthy Posted September 21 Posted September 21 It is the old Methodist church in Narrandera, which became the Uniting church, now a B&B. She was just passing through the town. We only went there when visiting my grandparents, it was compulsory. 1
red750 Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Just been to the Optus shop to try and sort out the mess with my daughter's email password. While waiting for service I had a quick look at the iPhone Air phone on display. All this hoohar about how thin it is, with a thumping great camera sticking out the back. What's the point? 2
Marty_d Posted September 23 Posted September 23 You're asking for logic from Apple? They have rusted on supporters. If they released a turd embossed with the Apple logo there'd be a line around the block the night before release. 1 3

octave Posted September 23 Posted September 23 In defence of iPhone (and I do not own one and have never owned one or have plans to be one), they are superior for the hearing impaired. My sister in law has had severe hearing loss for many years and really relies upon her iPhone and its interaction with her hearing aids. Whilst Android may be catching up, it is still behind. iPhones offer more advanced and integrated built-in hearing aid support than Android, including seamless integration with MFi-certified devices, features like Live Listen to turn the phone into a microphone, and upcoming software that allows AirPods to function as hearing aids with personalized settings. While Android devices have some hearing aid compatibility features, they generally require more setup via apps and lack the depth of system-level integration and features found on iOS. 2
red750 Posted September 23 Posted September 23 iPhones are up to model 17. Mine is a model 6. Doesn't have all the goodies, but it does what I want. I use plug-in wired earphones and can hear better than the hearing aids I have. I don't have the $$$ to buy more recent models. My old model 6 is a hand-me-down from one of my sons. I use it for SMS texts and taking photos. I occasionally use the calculator, but no apps. 1
onetrack Posted September 23 Posted September 23 (edited) I don't believe "newer is better" when it comes to phones (and a lot of other electronic items). SWMBO and I each had Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phones for several years, from about 2016 to 2022. The Note 4 came out in 2014 and it was a cracker of a phone, easy to use, had a stylus in it, that you wrote notes on the screen with, and it took good photos. But we had to give the Note 4's up, because they fell behind in bandwidth capabilities. Plus, I ran over my Note 4 with my tractor crane, and didn't do it much good! - but it still worked, even with a buckled case! So SWMBO bought a Galaxy A54 and I bought a Motorola Edge 30 Fusion. Both are disappointments, and both lack many features that the Note 4 had. The Note 4's had replaceable batteries, the A54 and the Edge 30 have sealed cases. And the Edge 30 has a back and front that is made of glass (as I found out, as soon as I dropped it!) It's a PIA, because the phone is almost "unfixable" - and when I went past a phone repair kiosk and asked about fixing the cracked case, they wanted $250 to fix it! I only paid a bit under $500 for the Edge 30, so paying $250 to simply fix a shattered case is a dead loss! It still works O.K., it just looks like crap. SWMBO is disappointed in her A54, every upgrade seems to change so many features on the phone, she has to try and find out what happened, and figure out how it all works with the upgrade. And both phones have poor user-friendliness, with so many features hidden under menus and icons, that you need to spend hours figuring out where the features are. I don't know what to buy for a new phone, the new Galaxys are full of photography gimmicks, with 3 cameras and everything oriented towards taking photos. I'd prefer a basic but robust model, and good user-friendliness, over 20 imaging gimmickry setups. I must be getting old, I don't take a hundred selfies a day, and don't have a website with 100,000 followers hanging on every single thing I'm doing, every minute of the day! - so, I'm definitely lagging! 😞 Edited September 23 by onetrack
rgmwa Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Apart from my first phone, a Nokia 3310 which was great, I’ve always had iPhones starting in about 2015 when I wanted to run OzRunways. I like the iPhones but refuse to pay more than $750 or sign up for one on a plan, so currently have an iPhone 11 which I bought about two years ago and is fine for what I want and will last me until it finally dies and I need to buy another one.
octave Posted September 23 Posted September 23 I am in the lucky position of getting hand-me-downs from my father-in-law. Basically, whenever he upgrades, I get his old one, which is still pretty good. This does lead to some good-natured banter. I will often remind him that the new Pixel phone is out, and perhaps he should upgrade. If I had to, I probably would spend a reasonable (but not stupid) amount on a phone. The camera is quite important to me. I have been a keen photographer for many years, but these days, a good phone camera produces pictures as good as my trusty SLR and at a fraction of the weight. I do tend to use plenty of apps. Many of these apps save me money or time, and some are just interesting, such as star charts or bird/plant identification. When we see damaged infrastructure or vandalism or dumped rubbish or abandoned trollies etc, we use an app called Snap Send Solve, take a picture and you can at the touch of a button, have that info sent to the appropriate people. We have used this mainly for abandoned trolleys or dumped rubbish, and the problem was remedied quickly, and you get a report back. When it comes to my phone, that is the function I probably use the least.

red750 Posted September 23 Posted September 23 I was watching Sunrise this morning and their tech expert was telling about some unknown features of an iPhone, the later models I guess, that people may not know about. Things like using the phone as a document scanner. One feature allows you to take a photo of a plant, or a bird, and press an Info button which will display what flower or bird it is. How did I live without that feature? I'm not into using SMS shorthand, and don't often send long texts, but when I do, it helps to be able to dictate the message instead of pressing those tiny keys with my fat fingers. It's handy to have a convenient camera in your pocket which a photo op happens, like the one below. I wouldn't go around every day with my SLR digital hanging around my neck. I only use it if I go out specifically, such as to the airport. 1
spacesailor Posted September 24 Posted September 24 Upgrades . This Galaxy tablet starts with " please update " . I have looked into the features & not one suits me . I detest " split screen " but it sometimes appears !, although it's not downloaded . spacesailor

Marty_d Posted September 24 Posted September 24 I have pranked a work colleague by leaving a message on their desk to call "Sue Ridge". The number was a local plumber. 3
onetrack Posted September 24 Posted September 24 It was pretty common to prank colleagues, by leaving a note to "call Mr Lyon" - with the number of the local zoo attached. 1
