Now only the crims have them, (other's have to hide their's away from the world), also the boys in Blue have them , ( so don't argue with the police )

"There are now more than 1 million registered guns in NSW, and 90,000 have been registered in the past two years alone, according to NSW Firearms Registry data released under freedom of information laws."

Sorry but I disagree, your statement is obviously incorrect which must be a little embarrasing for you.

Other than that you seem to suggest that we are negetaviely impacted because there are too few legal gun owners compared to criminals who possess guns. Which country would you prefer us to be like perhaps the US?

I'm a gun owner and quite happy with John Howard's action on gun reform.

I bet NZ wishes they'd learned that lesson from us too.

As for the US, they're absolutely useless on guns. Who'd want to be in a country where you have to teach your 5-year-old to drop under their desk at the sound of bangs?

I grew up in the UK,

When the "Sirens sounded" you ran to the shelter & put on your "GAS MASK", Or In my case, At school "Get under the desk or table.

Not a lot of difference.and we weren't at war. did you know that !.

After a time the sirens were used to sound lunch break for the workers,

Comparing the German invasion of England during the London Blitz in wartime, to "normal" periods is ridiculous, Spacey.

.. Allowing military style rapid fire heavy calibre weapons to the general population would certainly be a challenge for any Government to Justify, but American's are no more stupid than I would suggest any other people on the earth. They have however a history including a civil war of brother against brother in some instances basically over slavery (The cotton Industry was very profitable with slavery supporting it)t hey had to fight the British. to get rid of their control. The Indians to steal their land , The mexicans To steal their land. Perhaps the French?? in the north. They say they are Democratic but don't accept the result of all elections. Only the results they want.. If someone chooses to go socialist (democratically) they arc up and suppress it by any means.. They NOW say we don't trust Governments even the ones WE elect and need to arm to prevent a World Government controlling THEM when THEY formed the League of Nations which (later became the United Nations) after WW2 to try to stop the likelihood of further world wars Yet they NOW IGNORE any of the UN rules ? Confusing and opportunistic?. A very complex situation to deal with when the NRA and the weapons manufacturer's have so much power over the government. Trump would not have been elected without their support, (and that of the Ku Klux Clan).Scary stuff WOT? or is it OK if you like Trump, Anything goes? Nev

Don't do it OK... we need more sensible lefties here, not less!!

My son moved to NZ 5 years ago and is about to become a NZ citizen. He keeps trying to convince us to move to NZ and I must admit the idea is becoming more and more appealing.

Leftie? Crickey Marty, on some issues I'm called a right wing nutter, on others, left. I’m dizzy!

My bad, "sensible generally progressive person" then... I know everyone's different and labels don't really help. Whatever you are, your country needs you!

The Yanks "They have however a history including a civil war of brother against brother"

A bit like the British, the Republic of England, then a civil war the to get the monarchy back, with less powers.

Then give it all to Europe.

What next another civil war !.

To get England back to the British people.

( I have a thousand or so relative's in the UK.

BUT

I'm not allowed to bring them to this country.

Yes Spacey but that's because some of your 10 pound Poms weren't good examples of what we want. ALL my ancestors are from the UK and weren't Convicts. They were from the North and got sick of being threatened every time they changed their religion in the south. There's no BRITISH people as such They came from all sorts of places, either as refuges or conquerers . ..Nev

Have to agree there Marty. A relative in Michigan has never owned a gun. He did some military service in the USAF, but never felt the need to buy personal firearms.

He says that a couple of baseball bats and a taser in case of intruders is quite sufficient. One of his sons is a keen Skeet shooter, but uses the club shotguns, which are safely locked away at the range after use. I still recall the story of His Mum ( Born in the UK and a cousin of My Mother ) who had her ear lobe shot off in a crowded supermarket by a cop chasing someone. . . and the five year old child who found Mom's gun in her handbag and shot her dead with it. . ( also in a supermarket ) multipy this tragedy by a few thousand accidental and deliberate gun deaths in the US, and it shows an unbelievable number, growing daily.

Horrendous Faux wild west attitude. 'Protect our Second Amendment' . . . . . .LOAD OF BOLLOX.

Gun deaths inflicted at home by fellow Americans many times outnumber those Americans actually killed by those evil terrorists that the US spends billions pursuing. When will they realise that the NRA is public enemy No.1.

Gun control laws here in the UK are very strict. Shotguns and rifles are permitted for two reasons only, 1) Sporting use. 2) Pest control. However, if the applicant for a firearms or shotgun permit has even a whiff of a criminal conviction, they can forget it. Which is the reason that you rarely hear of a legal owner being involved in a shooting incident. The Law is onerous, and the discovery of any Non -licenced gun ALWAYS attracts a custodial sentence and quite rightly too in my view.

I will add that those interested in collecting / using old flintlocks and such are included in the 'Sporting' category, Including cap and ball hand guns, as well as old Black powder Pistols. No pistol using centre fire or rim fire expanding ammunition is allowed.

Unfortunately, being immersed in the gun culture of the United States is resulting in our young police being too quick on the trigger. I can remember that there were hardly any shootings by police when I was one from 1980 to 2010, except for a few by "gangster" police. Now there are too many and police have a much better selection of tools to disable offenders - extendable batons, OC spray, tasers, and the most forgotten one, the tongue. Perhaps our young police are getting too much training in the use of force and not enough in the use of thought.
