It is interesting that Austrlians have moved away from tea drinking to coffee drinking over the past 50 years. I wonder if we can atrtribute it to Italian migrants who introduced the espresso type of coffee?

 

I wonder if Australia's coffee culture is similar to that in any other country. I can't see it being the same as that of the USA, where it seems that filter coffee is the norm.

I still tea about 99% of the time. It must be my Anglo-Saxon ancestry. I find coffee makes me "edgy", I have a low tolerance to the chemicals in coffee. Caffeine is supposed to be high in tea as well as in coffee, but I find the caffeine in coffee is not good good for me, I'm very sensitive to it.

The coffee culture is certainly a uptake of Italian coffee here in Australia.

 

We are now considered one of the premium coffee cultures in the world.

Even Americans with taste buds seek the Aussie version as takeaway, so Aussie chains are taking over from Starbucks.

 

In recent food Olympics, Australia was number one for coffee.

 

We also grow premium coffee in northern NSW and southern QLD.

Having grown in in Villawood, I have been surrounded by European migrants. No, I don't think coffee consumption is connected with europeans. Otherwise Aussies would prefer good coffee. 

 

I put it down to the constant american TV and movie exposure. This has changed our preferences.

 

The europeans have gradually introduced better coffee, but I  think the initial trend was a result of american marketing, similar to the acceptance of american jeans instead of trousers, and their Cola company would not be so popular.
