Dax, it wouldn't have taken too long for you to figure out that thread drift is almost mandatory on this site. A bit like a rabbit hole, but sooner or later we find our way back to the start. I like this forum. There's a lot of interesting ideas and viewpoints, plus it's usually done in a polite and tolerant way. Unlike some forums where you almost need your lawyer present to make a post. This forum is vibrant without confrontation (usually) which is a big plus.

I have a sour taste in my mouth. Today, a member facetiously told me to go ahead and ban him. So I did.

 

Initially, I had informed him (I assume the gender) that complaints had been made about his tone in posts and that they lacked the decorum which, over the years, the members have established as their norm. Not more than an hour or so later he posted again in the same vein. What was a Moderator to do? The softly-softly approach clearly didn't work. The response to that was clearly contemptuous. So, in compliance with his childish comeback, I banned him from the site for a couple of months.

 

I am prepared to accept strongly debated points. I am prepared to accept ribbing of the kind that goes on between mates. If a person wants to post that kind of thing, then before hitting the <SUBMIT> button, consider if you would say the same thing, face-to-face and within arm's reach. But I am not prepared to accept contempt, and I doubt if there is anyone amongst you who would not agree.

What we have been talking about is indeed a serious matter, and shock horror, reflects the application of democracy on this site. Those of us who have been granted a modicum of authority over the site will always listen to members' comments and consider them in the light of what members have decided are the standards to be met when participating in discussions.
