old man emu Posted Friday at 08:17 AM Posted Friday at 08:17 AM Actually the electorate is named in honour of Henry Parkes who is called the Father of Federation. The name was applied to a Sydney electorate from 1901 to 1964, then used for the 1984 election. The name was applied to its current electorate in 2022. The town of Parkes was part of the colonial expansion of the early 19th century, originally founded in 1853 as the settlement Currajong, named for the abundance of kurrajong trees in the local area by the settlers, but was then known as Bushman's (from the local mine named Bushman's Lead). In August 1873, Henry Parkes (later Sir Henry) visited the area and in December 1873 the town was officially renamed Parkes in his honour. (Sir Henry Parkes is recognised as having played an instrumental role in the federation of Australia.) The town's most well-known claim to fame is as the site of the "The Dish", the radio telescope that received the images of the USA invading the Moon in 1969. (What were you dong on that day?) Some others might thing that a better claim is that it is the home of a branch of HARS, the aviation museum.

Grumpy Old Nasho Posted Friday at 02:41 PM Posted Friday at 02:41 PM One of you guys can put in a vote for me tomorrow, all I ask is that the Coalition is placed last, and the ALP placed second last. 2
Jerry_Atrick Posted Friday at 03:10 PM Author Posted Friday at 03:10 PM I'll be watching the ABC count tomorrow, which will morning to about afternoon. My niece and her boyfriend are coming over for the long weekend in the morning. .They will realise what a nerd I am.. 1

Jerry_Atrick Posted Friday at 05:52 PM Author Posted Friday at 05:52 PM Wow.. I think it is time the AEC wielded some of its power. It doesn't matter what side does it, when it is done, consequences have to flow: 1 1
old man emu Posted Saturday at 02:50 AM Posted Saturday at 02:50 AM Well. That was an effort. I didn't have to wait in line for very long, but working out how to record my vote was very difficult due to the number of candidates to select from. I had to mark 10 boxes to complete a valid vote for the Lower House. Numbering the major Parties' candidates was easy, but trying to sort the wheat from the chaff amongst the rest was made difficult because I knew nothing of their alliances or policies. Then I had to attack the Senate ballot paper. Once again, the major Parties were easy to indicate, but then there were all sorts of other groups whose alliances or policies I had never learned of. I simply had to interpret the name of each group to see which ones would get a tick and which ones would miss out. If the Legalise Marijuana party gets in, I'll be stoned. 3
red750 Posted Saturday at 04:05 AM Posted Saturday at 04:05 AM Our polling booth is in the Secondary College at the end of our street. There was quite a lengthy queue, but I must have looked all in, because a young guy came up and said "You can come straight through." I said, "Thanks, but I'll wait here with my daughter." Only a minute or two later, a lady in a hi-viz jacket came up and said "Come with me." and walked my daughter and I straight through. Probably pee'd a lot in the queue off. The white Senate paper was more than a full armspan long.

spacesailor Posted Saturday at 05:18 AM Posted Saturday at 05:18 AM I've been getting that treatment for many years , but , today , there was not a lot of helpers , So we ( pleural ) just walked past that Looong line , to the front, then a helper came & pointed to the scrutineer awaiting clients. Also no chairs awaiting the senior citizens. So had to use the bus-stop seating when going home for a ' rest-stop ' . when home had have a good ' sit down ' & a cup of tea , before awakening the urge to do something . spacesailor 1 1

ClintonB Posted Saturday at 07:15 AM Posted Saturday at 07:15 AM Now we just have to wait and see if we are buggered, or buggered. 24hrs of news coverage and live updates should just about do it. 1 1

red750 Posted Saturday at 08:31 AM Posted Saturday at 08:31 AM Election day rocked as controversial One Nation founder tragically dies. Australian politics has been rocked by the news the co-founder of One Nation David Ettridge has died after a long battle with cancer. The 79-year-old former politician, and former menswear model, is believed to have passed away on Wednesday in South Australia. Ettridge founded the One Nation Party alongside Pauline Hanson and David Oldfield in 1997, holding the role of national director until 2000. He and Hanson were jailed in August 2003 after they were found guilty of fraudulently registering One Nation in the District Court of Queensland. The pair were eventually acquitted and their convictions were overturned two and a half months later in the Court of Appeal. The two politicians reportedly fell out after they were released from prison, with Ettridge claiming on ABC's Four Corners in 2017 that One Nation abandoned him. Ettridge claimed he had been let with debt, costing him his home and personal wealth, after the party didn't compensate him for his legal fees. One Nation rejected this claim and told him to cease contact with the party. 1
Jerry_Atrick Posted Saturday at 10:33 AM Author Posted Saturday at 10:33 AM (edited) Wow,,, This early in the count, and the ABC are saying Labor retains the government: (From The Age): I think it is a bit early to call it, but its astonishing, given how early it is in the count. Postals and early votes to count, too.. Edited Saturday at 10:35 AM by Jerry_Atrick 1
onetrack Posted Saturday at 10:40 AM Posted Saturday at 10:40 AM I stand by what I said previously - Labor will win, and any swing to the Conservatives, will be minimal at best. As with the W.A. election, the Greens and Independents will pick up the swing that would have gone to the Conservatives in previous decades. The Liberals need to take a long hard look at themselves, with their Trump alignment, stepping back into fossil fuels, clamping down on migration, and generally wishing for a return to the 1950's, where White Anglo-Saxons ruled, and women knew their place - in the kitchen. We live in the 2020's and things have changed in a big way - and we won't be going back to manufacturing in Australia any time soon, either. 1

The Libs pollster on the ABC is again looking very forlorn and can't see a way forward at the moment. I'm actually feeling a bit sorry for the guy. He's trying to keep toeing the party line but his expression is getting sadder and sadder. Mind you he had a savage go at the Greens so that reduced my sympathy for him. 1
Jerry_Atrick Posted Saturday at 11:29 AM Author Posted Saturday at 11:29 AM (edited) Last election, he was much the same for him... Will the Libs win the election, or are they so beholden to the Murdoch press and their sponsors, they they will continue the trajectory? Australia needs a strong and principled opposition for all Aussies. Currently listening to Dutton's speech. And, I have to say, his speech is magnanimous in defeat. Feel for his kids though.. I understand why leaders feel the need to put their kids up on the stage, but that is something they all could drop. Edited Saturday at 11:35 AM by Jerry_Atrick 1
Marty_d Posted Saturday at 11:36 AM Posted Saturday at 11:36 AM Wow, that was quick. Didn't think we'd get the results tonight. 1 1
Jerry_Atrick Posted Saturday at 11:56 AM Author Posted Saturday at 11:56 AM (edited) Just listening to a rather happy Penny Wong... but looking down at the seat count: 85 to Labor - a majority of 10 - up from 1.. with 18 seats in doubt.. And so far, Greens have none. Wow! Was it all Chump? Edited Saturday at 11:59 AM by Jerry_Atrick 1
old man emu Posted Saturday at 12:00 PM Posted Saturday at 12:00 PM I was gob smacked too. A Labor landslide and Dutton ousted from his seat. Unfortunately the ABC is imply showing total Coalition seats. I'd like to know the spilt between Libs and Nationals. Perhpas we could have a little proud Leader of the Opposition. 1 2
red750 Posted Saturday at 12:34 PM Posted Saturday at 12:34 PM My local (ex) member Michael Sukkar has lost his seat. 1
