Former Australian cricket captain and coach Bob Simpson dies, aged 89.

Simpson was a giant figure in Australian cricket for more than four decades, playing 62 Test matches, famously emerging from retirement at age 41 to lead Australia during the World Series Cricket era, and later becoming the nation’s first full-time coach.

As a player, Simpson took until his 30th Test to crack his first century but turned it into 311 and batted for almost 13 hours at Old Trafford.

He formed with Bill Lawry one of Australia’s greatest opening partnerships, in an era without protective equipment.

Simpson and Lawry still share the record partnership for an Australian opening pair – 382 against the West Indies in 1965.

Terence Stamp, who made his name as an actor in 1960s London and went on to play the arch-villain General Zod in the Hollywood hits Superman and Superman II, has died aged 87, his family said.

The Oscar-nominated actor starred in films ranging from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Theorem in 1968 and A Season in Hell in 1971 to The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 1994, in which he played trans woman Bernadette Bassenger.

I wasn't sure whether to post this obit given that this fellow may not fit into the "well-known: category.  I do tend to judge people as to whether they have heard of him or not.

The brilliant Tom Lehrer died on the 26 of July 2025. at the age of 97.

He was known as a musical satirist,  mathematician, and scientist. Tom worked at Los Alamos and Harvard University, among other places.

Lehrer quit writing  and performing satirical songs and went back to teaching, stating that  "Political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.”

In our house in the 90s, Tom was played daily.  We even still have a recording of our son, aged about five, singing along with every song (including the elements). Perhaps that is why our son turned out smart, woke and happy.  Here are a few examples of Leher's whimsical music.

Joe Bugner the pro boxer, has passed away at age 75 in a Brisbane aged-care home, after suffering from dementia for some years. I always thought he was Irish (never having studied up on him), but he was actually born in Hungary to Hungarian parents, and the family fled to Britain after the 1956 Communist invasion of Hungary.

He was raised in Britain and became the British Commonwealth and European boxing champion for a number of years.

He fought both Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, losing both championship fights - although Fraziers win was so close, it has been disputed. Joe retired from boxing in 1976 saying his heart was no longer in it, but he returned with sporadic comebacks over the next two decades, with varying success.

A poor investment in a vineyard that resulted in serious financial loss for him, made Bugner come back to boxing. He also acted in a few films, and was a contestant on the television show "I'm A Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here!", in 2009.

He moved to Australia in 1986 and fought as "Aussie Joe", when he did have matches after that time. He claimed he felt vilified in the U.K. after he ended the career of British boxing champion Henry Cooper via a disputed match result. Cooper was a smaller and lighter opponent, and lacked the reach of Bugner.

Joe was a huge bloke, 193cm (6' 4") and 102kgs, but as a boxer, it has been touted he lacked the "killer instinct" to ensure wins, after one early opponent Ulric Regis, died from brain injuries not long after a match with Bugner.

I don't about suits, but he definitely ran out of his allotted time. I wonder if he left a request to be buried in one of his finest suits?  😀

My parnter is in mourning - she trained as a fashion designer and spent the formative career years in fashion. Her opinion is the Italian designers are generallly the best..

Although she is looking forward to the exhibition they will no doubt put on in his memory.
