Once the zinc has gone the steel is not galvanically protected. Look how thick boat hulls are and they have to be constantly repainted, like the Sydney Harbour bridge. Nev

Despite the "Clean and Green" tag a lot of it is anything but. More than enough mining has been carried out extensively in the Past .The HYDRO HEC had a lot of influence then Gunns ran the show with logging and Gambling has a lot of control now. It's a place where the weather can be wild and variable. It's population is on a Par with Geelong and has a lot of infrastructure to support. Being an Island the transport costs of Sea and Air add to the drain on the residents resources. I've done Hundreds of flights there carrying People and cargo and 3 trips on motorcycles. Nev

It's recognised as one of the most hazardous occupations. Comparing it with road deaths is not valid. How many people are on the roads at any given time? Infinitely more. Trees on the road verge only hit cars in self defence. The mine operator must bear responsibility for the deaths. Yes. Unions DO care about members deaths. I don't see THAT as a problem. I come from a long line of Coal miners and steel workers and have a fair idea what tricks Management get up to with workers. Not all of them. I couldn't fault "Stewarts & Lloyds " when I worked for them. Nev
