They weren't using rifles; in all the footage there's not one rifle crack. They were using bolt action .410 shotguns, most likely with solid slugs.

Which explains why the death toll was so low considering they were shooting for about 15 minutes, compared to what it would have been with rifles. The inaccuracy of the .410 shotgun solid slugs is also a factor in why so many were wounded and not killed.

Well, they managed to kill 15 people, so that's not exactly a low toll. I can't hear the shooting sounds, my hearing is buggered, but I did see a shotgun shell on the ground, and it looked like a 12 ga, but it was difficult to judge, because there was nothing around it to compare, size for size.

Newer information has confirmed that the gunmen were involved in terrorist activities, travelling overseas for training, spending time training before the attack and telling family they were going fishing. According to Tony Burke, they has an ISIS flag in their vehicle. However, they only had single action firearms, not automatics, which kept deaths lower than might otherwise have been. But the father came to Australia in 1987, the son was born here, and they had only been on the periphery of ASIO investigations.
