Popular Post onetrack Posted July 18 Popular Post Posted July 18 (edited) As I've mentioned in passing in a couple of other threads, SWMBO and myself are on holidays in Broome for 12 days. 6 days down, 6 to go, and it's very nice up here, although the place is overrun with rich tourists! SWMBO is always encouraging me to buy a Lotto ticket here and there - but I often resist, because I don't believe the mid-week or Saturday Lotto is good value any more, since they changed the systems so you generally need 3 numbers and at least one supplementary to win anything - and it's usually only $8 or $10, anyway. The only reason I buy Lotto here is because the W.A. Govt owns LotteryWest and all profits are ploughed back into worthy community events, structures, grants - and the RFDS, too, of course. This is far better than lining the pockets of already wealthy people who own shares in a corporate structure such as Tatts. I've bought quite a few mid-week and Saturday Lottos in recent months and years, with very little success. An occasional win of $20 or $30 or $50, and they were few and far between. I like buying Powerpik 7's because you get all the Powerball numbers with that ticket selection, and this system vastly improves your chances of winning something. So, yesterday, I went into the LotteryWest agency near the Town Beach, and bought a Powerpik 7 ticket. I didn't check it until nearly bedtime, and then found I had FIVE winning numbers! Woo-hoo! I looked up the prizes and saw where 5 numbers won $195.25. I said to SWMBO, "Oooh, we've won close on $200 in the Powerball draw! She was chuffed, it's the most we've won on Lotto in about 30-plus years. So, we went down to the Lotto place this morning, placed the ticket in the checking machine, and it came back with THIS!!! I nearly fell over, I had no idea we'd won that much, and it was because I'd missed a number and because I'd forgotten they pay out on all the other smaller winning number combinations, too!! ClintonB Posted July 18 Posted July 18 There’s a lot of slave labour involved working for yourself, especially when you have other people. good news to hear somebody does better than the 11 to 13 I usually get back on a power hit, which is same as your system7 I think. Enjoy the rest of your holiday. 1 1
Jerry_Atrick Posted July 19 Posted July 19 tsk tsk tsk.. you gambloholic.. or that's what they say when I have a bet on the footy 😉 Well done... Get yourself and SWMBO a decent bottle of red or white - Margaret River, of course, so probably a white, and enjoy the rest of your holiday! 1
onetrack Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 Jerry, unfortunately for the wine industry, neither SWMBO or myself drink wine any more. The after-effects of wine drinking, we've both found unattractive, as we age. It knocks us around too much. I have an occasional whiskey, but a bottle lasts me a long time. We will have a good high-quality meal together shortly, but I'm afraid it won't be in Broome, the culinary skills here, leave a bit to be desired. We've also put a bid on a business-class upgrade for our return flight, that sounds like a good use for win money, to us. Re the win amount, it was less than half an hour after I posted, that I remembered how we could win so much. I'd forgotten the Powerpik 7 is a Systems ticket, and to work out your win amount, you have to consult the Systems Tables. I didn't even think of looking at the Tables initially, as it's been quite a while since I bought a Systems ticket. So, we won Division 5, which was 5 numbers and the Powerball, which was $195.25 - but when I looked at the Tables, a Powerpik 7 win with 5 numbers also gives you 19 times the Division 7 prize, which was $49.95 - which adds $949.05 to your prize winnings - bringing our total win up to $1,144.30. https://www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au/assets/games/documents/systems-table/powerball-systems-table 3
rgmwa Posted July 20 Posted July 20 I might have to start buying tickets. I'm pretty sure I'm well ahead so far, but you never know your luck, and as OT said at least here in WA my losses would go to a good cause. I wonder if they're tax deductible. 2
facthunter Posted July 20 Posted July 20 You have to be in it to win it but the ODDS are stacked against you. Gambling ruins a lot of lives and relationships . We are the Worlds Biggest Gambling addicts. THAT can't be helping. Nev 3
red750 Posted July 20 Posted July 20 My gambling is STRICTLY limited. Two 'mini' tickets (about $7 each, ONLY if the jackpot exceeds $10 mil. I occasionally win enough to pay for the next round of tickets. So I'm not taking tickets every week.

spacesailor Posted July 21 Posted July 21 Only ! , to tax your interest on that money, At their ' deeming rate ', not your bank's interest rate . spacesailor
onetrack Posted July 21 Author Posted July 21 I think it'll be a long time before we see lottery winnings taxed or gambling losses made tax deductible. But I'll wager a few fraudsters have claimed their gambling losses via devious methods, the same as they stole their gambling funds via devious means. I must say, I'm staggered at the number of people who are caught stealing from employers - and the worst ones, AFAIC, are the public servants in management positions who get caught forging invoices and inventing schemes to defraud the Govt. What is even more galling, is that for every one of them caught and exposed, there must be at least twice that number again rorting their employers and the Govt. There's still one W.A. bloke wanted for ripping off Fremantle Ports for $5M. He realised they were closing in on him, so he skipped the country and is living it up in Europe, still managing to avoid being nailed. We need to set up squads to track these scumbags down, and to drag them back to face the music. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-08-03/three-men-jailed-over-corrupt-scheme-at-fremantle-ports/102152358 1
facthunter Posted July 21 Posted July 21 Some People see the Gov't and Insurance Companies as free game. They also expect the Gov't to do EVERYTHING but don't want to pay Tax. Nev 3
spacesailor Posted July 22 Posted July 22 if , everyone paid the same rate of tax , most lower paid worker's would agree that it's OK paying their share . When are we going to make the wealthy pay their share , spacesailor 1

(Not that the latter actually pays tax, they use every available method to minimize what they pay). The tax scale should be progressive, but keep increasing not top out at whatever it is now. 1
facthunter Posted July 22 Posted July 22 As Kerry Packer said, Paying tax is "Optional" for the RICH. Nev 1
spacesailor Posted July 22 Posted July 22 (edited) and that's my point ! . pay that tax on the top line , not after the " fiddling " . spacesailor Edited July 22 by spacesailor 1

Jerry_Atrick Posted July 22 Posted July 22 (edited) I was telling someone at work about it today... when we were discussing the increasingly onerous taxation the Labour government is inflicting on the very people it is supposed to champion equality for.. but forgeting to spread the tax burden to others that have broader shoulders. facthunter Posted July 23 Posted July 23 Perhaps the Voters should on Nigel's past performance with UKIP. Nev
Jerry_Atrick Posted July 23 Posted July 23 They should for all the major parties. Just because a political party wears a label doesn't mean they have that label's values. There is something morally bankrupt about any government to want to remove a welfare payment from those that cannot bathe themselves through physical disability where that payment provides the assistance for them to get the care to have it done, yet leaves generous tax savings for the truly wealthy; and something pig-headed and callous about attempting to pursue it when there is a back bench revolt bigger than their massive majority that threatens to vote against it if not amended.. eventually the government amended the bill to do nothing.. but the government proceeded to suspend or remove the whip from some if the leaders of the revolt rather than accept true democracy. This is but one example of a continual stream of policy ans political failures of Labour since they were elected. Nigel can't believe the gifts the government give to reform daily.
