This ones in a "tricky" bit of topography and was never going to be easy. Luckily? for Sydney it got real with electric trains long ago, though they have had difficulties with repair and safety at times that service has made Sydney a better place. to live than it would have  been otherwise.  Nev

Straying off topic a bit, but at the last Queensland state election, the LNP came up with an election promise to build the Bruce Highway up to four lanes from the border to Cairns within 15 years. They said the estimated cost was $300 billion. The problem for them was that the highway is 80% federally funded and their mates in Canberra, Scotty and Co. would only commit to 20 million.

All the experts at the time said even if they had the 300 billion, it would be impossible to build in 15 years. I'd believe that as the new Caloundra turnoff on the highway took four years and a billion dollars to construct. Four years just for one intersection complex.

Ever increasing property prices in urban areas is what blows project costs out of the water.

The rail line from Perth to Mandurah went about $1.7B over budget thanks to rocketing property prices.

When the line was first proposed in 2004, it was estimated to cost $291M - it eventually cost $2B.

But the initial estimates indicated 18,000-20,000 people would use the line daily - however, the current patronage figures are more than double that figure, around 48,000 users daily.

From tonight's news, the original budget was $10 bn but has blown out to $26 bn, and could go further before it's finished. Residents intended to be the beneficiaries now say it's not worth proceeding when the total budget is so excessive and we are screaming for more hospitals, ambos, teachers, police, and firemen. The next state budget is sure to be a shocker.

To put it into Perspective, It will be about 1/10 th of the federal debt caused by Sco Mo's gifts to commerce like Qantas and Gerry Harvey and lack of fairness to a Labor state they never ceased attacking. That's the reason Friedenburger lost the safest Liberal seat in Australia (Kooyong) and Now works for Goldman Sachs.  Nev
