History has a way of repeating itself. The super rich don't need all of their wealth but are addicted to it. Their downfall over time is well documented in almost all European countries & Russia. The British seemingly were the only lot that saw the writing on the wall & it began with the Magna carta in 1215 but even that didn't stop the ultra rich either and the English civil war in the 1600s.

Let's see, about 200 million adults x $5 = a billion dollars. (less if Palantir gives him the names of those voting Republican).

On the assumption he would follow through (apparently, previously promised money including DOGE cheques for those who effectively took voluntary redundancy haven't been paid - but I have not researched it so it could just be a rumour), and assume it would take around 3 months to permeate through the economy, it would represent a c. 3.7% of GDP stimulus to the economy, with a lot of people who will spend it. What happens when you add to the M3 money supply? Inflation. And putting that much more in - in a short period - would bring back visions of people in Germany in the 30s.. Well, maybe not as bad, but inflation will hit hard, interest rates will rise to try and stem it and that $5K is not quite worth what they think it is. 

 

The US debt is at historical highs and yields are rising now (still YoY slightly down). The world economy is starting to feel the onset of a nasty flu. If Chumpo is true to his word and the Republicans win, you do not want to have or hold anyone else's debt.

Here is an analysis of Trump's $5K cheque announcement by, would you believe it?, an Australian professor of Economics living in the USA.  He asks five questions whose answers shoq that this announcement is hot air. Totally impractical, and even illegal under world moentary rules. The answer to his first question is obvious - would Trump deliver? No need for me to supply the answer to you.

Yeah, but a very clever one, notwithstanding the illegality of it. Everyone will see $5K in their eyes... many will see $10K (or more) to the household. It is not an amount to be sneezed out. Many people aren't taught basic economics (otherwise Chump would not have got in in the first place), so all they see is money money money - the stuff the very fabric of USA culture is made from. 

 

Even if the purchasing power of the USD halved overnight, 2.5K or 5K or more in today's money may well be quite an enticement to those on the bread line.. and the future is looking very bleak anyway, so looking bleaker is neither here nor there to them. 

 

That is why governments like keeping the masses poor.

Re eligibility - all we have is every American adult.. That would imply that non documented migrants would not be eligible, that is it. There was no Republican voting, white, straight church going caveats. So, that is all we have to go for. In theory, that would include those American adults living abroad, but they are dedicated from the count - that that it makes a material difference anyway. 

 

If the Rich sense it is a likely outcome, there will be inflation swaps being written for them to get rich against. Also, most of the uber Rich have welath managers and treasury teams, and they will be working hard to make money off the rising inflation and interest rates. Say property prices crash again.. bargains to be had when it picks up. The rich rarely think just the current financial year.

I see Trump promising to bribe the nation and if he succeeds in the election, will then ensure the "Deep state and socialist left" are to blame for stopping him sending the cheques.

 

Sadly, it's a extremely cunning plan, that might tip the mid term elections his way.

 

Let's just hope the pain from the war and tariffs, allows the great unwashed to see clearly through the bullshit.

I don't think it is realistic.either. Even with a stacked SCOTUS, it would he very hard for them to rule any law passed to do it as constitutional (hence my notwithstanding the illegality of it, above). That is the other reason it is clever. He doesn't need to blame it on the socialists - he knows he can't if the republicans win congress (both houses). He can then blame it on those judges that are a threat to America. Not that he knew it was illegal and wouldn't pass muster when he promised it. 

 

But should he get it passed, the rich won't stop him. More government debt ultimately equals more money for them even if it travels through the broader economy first.

I was watching the supporters seated behind him as he was about the make that offer. They were all holding placards with general words of support. What I notice was that about a second or so before he made the statement, these people were beginning to raise their placards from their laps and show signs of being about to cheer. Do you think the crowd was being instructed? 

 

Couldn't be! That sort of pre-planned crowed response only happens in China and North Korea.

The placards were no doubt produced by the Party as normal stuff given out at one of these events. You see those placards all the time at political meetings. You'll see them at Democrat meetings as well. That the crowd had them is not relevant. If a shot of the crowd that Trump was facing was shown, you would see the same placards amongst them.

 

What I thought I saw was the people behind him jumping the gun.

The letter, released by Kontinent, a Russian-language outlet in the United States. In it, Topol argues that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot stop the war in Ukraine, not because he does not want to, but because history shows that ending foreign wars has often triggered domestic unrest and even regime collapse in Russia.

Below is the letter in full. 

Dear Mr. President!
Dear Donald!

As the author of fifty books and a dozen films about Russia, I consider myself entitled to inform you.

You must know that he (Putin) cannot stop the war with Ukraine, even if you gift him your Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Trump Tower in New York, and a dozen of your golf clubs.

And not because he doesn’t want a break from war, but because he simply cannot.

Because he knows Russian history not from Medinsky’s textbooks, but the real one:

The return of Russian troops from Europe after the victory over Napoleon led to the anti-tsarist “Decembrist” uprising in 1825.

Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese War led to the 1905 Revolution.

The desertion of a million Russian soldiers from the Russo-German front during World War I forced Emperor Nicholas II to abdicate and caused the February Revolution of 1917.

The peace signed by Lenin with Germany allowed the Bolsheviks to execute the entire royal family.

The withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan in February 1989 marked the beginning of the USSR’s collapse.

Knowing this, Putin cannot end the war with Ukraine and bring his troops home.

Only the opportunity in May 1945 to keep almost his entire army in Europe as occupation forces helped Stalin avoid a postwar coup.

That is why Putin dreams of occupying Ukraine, as well as the Baltics, Finland, Poland, etc., to keep his army far away from Moscow.

He remembers how 525,000 soldiers returning from Afghanistan in 1989 turned into bandits—“Afghantsy”—who terrorized the entire population of the USSR.

And he knows what will happen if one and a half million soldiers, trained to kill, loot, and rape professionally, return home from the Ukrainian front.

The war with Ukraine has allowed Putin to get rid of two million of the most active opponents of his regime, whom he forced to flee Russia, while the rest of the young Russian men he either drove to the front or recruited into punitive services.

Today, any war—against Ukraine, the Baltics, NATO, anyone at all—is the best way to enforce Russia’s obedience to Putin and his junta.

Unfortunately, none of your advisers will explain this to you before your meeting with Putin, but you can check my arguments with Jack Matlock and Michael McFaul.

I do not want Putin—a KGB man, a thief, and a murderer of millions—to keep brazenly deceiving you, lying, and misleading my President.

Of course, I am not a military expert or political scientist, but I am a writer with a good memory.

I remember how Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II managed to push oil prices down to $9 per barrel, gave the Afghans “Stingers,” and thereby stopped Moscow’s takeover of Afghanistan and destroyed the USSR.

If you want to stop Putin and the imperial ambitions of at least half of Russia’s population, you need to do the same—bring oil prices down to at least $25 per barrel and give Ukraine the weapons that will help it crush the aggressor.

As for your desire to establish U.S.-Russian business partnerships, not in words but in reality, this could happen in a hundred years—or never at all.
