Russ
You've gota tip your hat to them......govt is considering ways to optimise available grounds at cemeteries...... Some " thinking out the box " person has a novel way........dig vertical holes, takes up less space. Adds a new meaning to " dying on your feet " ..........love it
rankamateur
With the decline of mining exploration there must be dozens of equipped crews who are looking for work and could plant one on top of the next down the same hole, save even more space at ground level. Just have to throw in a shovel full of gravel between deposits. Might make an exhumation a bit interesting though.

Bikky
In Brazil, people recommend burying your mother-in-law this way (after she's dead!), but head first. That way she can't dig herself out ...

Gnarly Gnu
The moz have been doing that here for decades. On my way to work I drive past a mosque that has a 'vertical burial plot' (pretty sure they don't call it that) alongside, set up in the 90's. Wouldn't bother me, could use a length of suitable diameter cardboard tube instead of a coffin. Hmm as a further option could include a charge below if you wish your remains to be launched skyward at some point.

pmccarthy
Some islanders and PNG natives placed a live prisoner in each post hole before standing the corner posts of a spirit house. The compaction would make a very efficient use of space. A contractor with an auger and a small pile driver could do well in the cemetery business. Jabiru Phil
Stumbled across an Aboriganal burial site years ago in a clay pan. Circular about 2 ft in diameter obvious by the colour change and some skull showing due to erosion. Have often wondered if they were buried sitting up. Phil. Old Koreelah
Either way, all I want to hear at my funeral is " he's still moving" ...that's why we have a "wake". Also why people were once buried with a string tied around their thumb- so they could be "saved by the bell".
