It gets worserer. The player who was given the red card was what is known as a birthright citizen. He was born to an English couple who were holidaying in the USA. His mother was seven months' pregnant when she wanted to return to England at teh end of the holiday, but the airline declined to carry her due to the risk of an in-flight birth. So they remained in the USA and the player was born on US soil, granting him birthright citizenship. I don't know how he later became a member of the USA team as I don't know anything about his career.

 

Trump's birthright Executive Order has just been thrown out by SCOTUS and Trump is fuming about that. Yet he has the gall to ask (demand?) FIFA organisers to put the red card penalty on hold so that this birthright player can represent the USA in the next round of competition. You've got to have some sympathy for the player being innocently caught up in this blanant act of corruption.

It's also bad for the US team. If they lose, they're out and if they win, it will seem that they cheated. The best thing by far would be for player himself to refuse to play on the grounds that the rules are the rules. Then even if they lost he and the team would be heroes, Trump and FIFA would get a poke in the eye, and the world would applaud.

Well, Belgium won.. So, the USA is out. I feel sorry for the team, because normally I - and I  bet many millions more - are very happy with the result, rather than either ambivalent or even sorry they went out. 

 

No one I have spoken to, including two yanks over here, wanted the USA to win.

A 4:1 win is great result for Belgium. They must have been fired up for the match. Maybe Trump did them a favour in hindsight.

Trump never admits defeat in anything he is involved with. He will have some comment and blame everyone except himself and then state that if he'd been able to do x y or z they would have won so really even though it was a loss they won anyway (Just like the 2020 election).

According to some reports the USA team was way of their game. The poor fellow at teh centre of the controversy had a shocker. Despite the loss to Belgium, the tournament still carries yet another taint. One wonders how this worldwide game came to have one of the tournament's sponsors being a country that doesn't seem to be so strongly supported at the profesional level as all those other countries.

Trump was sitting with Zelensky during the NATO meeting and talking with the press. Someone asked Trump about whether he thought Putin and Zelensky could resolve the war. After waffling a bit he turned to Zelensky and asked if he would travel to Moscow to talk with Putin. Zelensky didn’t take the bait but just said, “Well, that’s a bit difficult. There are lots of Ukrainian drones over there.” The press laughed but Trump wasn’t amused.

According to Trump he was so impressed with his new plane he wanted to show it to the troops at some US bases in Europe or the UK, I forget which. He would never admit to being embarrassed about anything. In fact he sounded just as pleased to be number one on Iran’s hit list as he was about allegedly being number one on Tik Tok. Being a winner is all that matters.

Trumps address to the nation is the latest example of his desperation. He now says there is evidence China stole the data of 220 million voters and that they meddled in the 2020 election he lost but really won despite multiple investigations and lawsuits all finding him 100% wrong. The problem is that a lot of his MAGA nutters believe him and this is the first step towards declaring a national emergency to prevent the mid term elections from being held.

The report I saw said that actually China was barracking for Biden, and that it was Putin who was pumping for Trump. I think that it makes more sense that China would prefer the Democrats over Trump. I suspect that they had a good idea of what Trump could have done.

 

I wonder if we would be in abetter place now if Trump had won in 2020. Ther would not have been the four years in which to sit on the sidelines and prepare the Republican manifesto, and by now we would have been rid of him. Most likely there would be no Iranian war.
