It is a shame that the USA, in general, does not have any laws preventing vexatious litigation. Several states have vexatious litigant laws — California, Florida, Hawaii, Ohio, and Texas  If it was the same in the rest of the States Trump would be stuffed.

Trump has just dealt a deathblow to Musk. By Executive Order, Trump has imposed a 95% tariff on graphite coming from China.

So??? We all know about the rare eath minerals needed for the production of batteries for EVs, but what do you know about the other components of an EV battery?

Have you ever pulled a AA battery apart? In the middle is a rod of black material. That rod is the conduit for the electrons produced by the chemical reaction of the gooey stuff filling the battery case. The rod is made of graphite. The battery of  an EV is made up of lots of single units of similar design.

What Trump has done is greatly increased the cost of manufacturing EV batteries, or perhaps the cost of those batteries made in China which are fitted to EVs. As a result, the value of TESLA shares has dropped by 0.35% yesterday. Doesn't sound much, but that represents a $US5.85 per share drop in value over the day's trading. Considering that as of July 2025, Tesla has 3.22 billion shares, that's a lot of value lost.

Even a Trump -owned Supreme Court would find it hard to find a way to rule his way on that one.

The greatest threat to America as regards Trumps idiotic decision-making, is his plans to hobble renewable energy and EV's, via the total removal of subsidies and grants, for both cheaper energy generation, and cheaper transportation.

But while Trump does this, China forges ahead with massive renewable energy power generation and widespread adoption of EV's. The Chinese have installed more renewable energy generation in the last 12 mths, than the whole of the U.S. generates from all energy sources in the last 12 mths.

So, the future for America is higher energy costs, as gas and other fossil fuels have to be used to generate power, due to a shortage of investment in renewable energy - while the Chinese economy is transitioning to a lower-cost model, thanks to cheaper renewable power sources.

In effect, Trump has shot himself in the foot with his desire to turn the clock back to widespread fossil fuel use, as American industry will become uncompetitive with high energy costs in forthcoming years.

This makes Trumps aims to revitalise American manufacturing and industry so much more difficult to achieve, and it means that China will continue to win the title as the worlds greatest manufacturing economy.

I wonder if donny will apply tariffs to Aussie grapfite, too?

Australian battery graphite from mine to market

For once I agree with donny's tariff on chinese graphite.

According to Australian Mining Review, china has been product dumping their govt subsidised graphite into USA in order to squash competing local production of graphite.

Early this year they reported.....

"Some Australian firms made waves in the global graphite industry recently, joining ranks with American graphite companies in a petition urging the U.S. Department of Commerce and International Trade Commission to investigate China’s alleged dumping of graphite products at unsustainable and unfair prices.

Experts at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, the law firm handling the case, estimate dumping margins as high as 920%. If the investigation proves conclusive, The U.S Department of Commerce will assess the use of additional tariffs equal to the extent of unfair pricing."

Given the reports of Trump's physical and mental decline, I can't see him being able to carry out the role of President for the full four years. He'll either die or have to be replaced according to the provisions in Amendment 25 of the Constitution. That would put Vance in the driver's seat, but it would not greatly change the agenda currently being persued.

So we are going to have to weather the chaos until the next Presidential elections in 2028. The 2026 mid-terms might result in a Democrat majority in both Houses, but that would only result in the removal of Trump and his replacement by Vance. Unfortunately, the destruction of teh US eonomy that has already taken plac, and any further destruction before 2028 will not be reversed at teh ballot box in 2028. It is going to take probably a decade for things to get back to pre-Trump conditions.

What concerns me is the effect of a collapse of eh US economy on teh world economy, since we have become used to aligning global trade with the US dollar. What say you, Jerry, about this concern?

If there is a democrat majority in both houses things will change. If they do something stoopid, an impeachment in the house will be carried in the senate . They will have to tame what they do or it will be coitins

I think the US economy is unlikely to recover. The death throes have hardly started.

China has learned how to use capitalism against an opponent, just like US used to. Now that US has woken up it's way too late to balance trade.

The Western world is in so much debt and there are two organisations that hold it.. The banks - usually through their high net worth investors.. and.. China.

There are only two ways out, without handing control to either:

1. Print money, let hyperinfaltion take over and, these days, starve half your population to death...

2. World War Three. or some approximation..

Or... 3.. Jump on SpaceX to Mars..

(Note, there is some Sarcasm in the above.. just some.. .;-))

No it's not crazy.

On the first spacships we should send our bureacrats, world leaders, investment bankers, car salesmen and hairdressers. We need them to be there first, to set up the essential services for us.

Then we wait until they are functioning before sending any normal people.

Jerry, that's a bit depressing.

The other option (just as depressing) is mass population readjustment by pandemic.

Forget Melbourne, relocate to the Simpson Desert.

Anyway, if something really big is about to collapse, I don't want to be standing near it.

You're about as far from big things as you can get Peter.  If you plant out your property with vegetables you can live happily on wallaby & veg stew while civilization collapse.
