1. I like this guy...he actually has a smart head on his shoulders. Been watching him for a while now...we need more of him..especially here .
2. The reason why fax and eftpos wont work on the line now is that the data coming in on the copper is totally different that what it used to be. Think of it as it now speaks chinese instead of english so you old fax wont work anymore as it does not have a translator built in. You now hook your modem to that chinese language and it will translate the line for you and give you "english" at the 2 wire telephone port. Your hearing aid loop is made to just output audio frequencies that the modem now makes for you. I would think your loop interface would be connected to your home phone somehow. Did the telephone line hook into your loop box and then the telephone plugged into the loop box or does the telephone line plug into the phone and the loop box plugs into the handset ?
3. No they didnt replace to copper to my house. But the majority of the bad connections were on the exchange side of the node so that has now been replaced by the fibre. The copper between the node and me there are 4 pits and after rain then its a problem with all those clips they use. But at least 99% of the time my connection is great...the worst I have seen it drop to was 15mb dload speed. I just did a speedtest and its 6.10pm which is high usage time and the results are pretty good
4. I have had the NBN connected now for around 2 months. I have to say my internet has been fantastic. All the copper around our area is very poor and telstra wont replace it and telstra will tell you that. They just say they wont replace it until the NBN pay them to do it. My absolute best speed I ever got on ADSL2+ was 3.2mb but usually went from 300kb to 1.3mb was average and used to stop regularly. I am 5.5km from the exchange. The FTTN is what we get here...fibre to the node that is so basically its optical fibre to the node and then down the copper to here. It is the most cost efficient way to get faster speeds to the populous. Most people have not been educated about the system and how it works and there is a lot of crap floated around about what it is and what it cant do. Some figures to ponder. from the node where it is 100mb you can basically be up to 300 mtrs from the node and still get almost 100mb speed anything further down the line you will get less. I am around 1km from the node and according to the performance charts I should be able to get around 25mb so I applied for 25mb and I get a pretty constant 23mb dload and 4.66 mb upload speed. To connect fibre to every home is waste of money..the resources in equipment and hardware to do so is stupid...you would be better off building infrastructure projects like roads and dams and water pipelines to farming areas. 25mb is way more than most need anyway. The only reason you want 100mb is if your running porn servers or multiple video streaming like a online doctor or something. I can run 2 netflix hd streams and a foxtel stream all while dloading as much software or watching youtube...or redtube if you prefer that and it never buffers. It is all limited by the throughput of the equipment in the exhcanges that is where any slowdowns or holdups are You can not run a normal fax or eftpos terminal on the std NBN you need a special IP style connected unit it wont work becayse your telephone line now basically speaks a different language that what it always was. The hearing aid loop stuff will work exactly the same as it did before. It is connected on the customer side of the modem which is just done at audio frequencies. You dont need a new telephone handset as the 2wire port on the back of the modem is basically the same when it comes to standard voice audio There is so much crap I hear people spewing out about the NBN its ridiculous.....technically that is.... as far as service goes then that is an entirely different matter..that is no different that bashing your head against a wall fighting telstra or your main telephone provider about connection issues etc or just bad technicians they employ because there isnt enough good techs around anymore. Everyone is blaming NBNco but its actually not them its the service provider
5. I realize the agenda she has and pushes but what I found interesting is how she actually put the notion out there with the explanation. I had never heard it expressed that way before and what she says is actually reasonably true about how many actually are and are not responsible
6. Dutch...this video puts a different perspective on radical islam..hope it works ......the link that is https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1301682289907250
7. whats wrong with arming the bobbies with tasers?
8. Ok riddle me this...if you decriminalize these drugs..what happens with all the idiots driving their cars like now. The western highway out of Brisbane in the northside is called the "crystal highway" the Dagular Highway...I drive it to work and back 4 days a week. The copper get so many drugged drivers on this road every day it really isnt funny..the local stats are 1 in 6 drivers are drug affected...decriminalize these drugs and then what do you do?...they will just drive on cleaner drugs ?. I just did some research on Portugal after you said it as I didnt know they had done it. I will ask my mate who is Portuguese and has been back there recently and see what he says from first hand knowledge and here is a quote " Portugal decriminalised the use of all drugs in 2001. Weed, cocaine, heroin, you name it — Portugal decided to treat possession and use of small quantities of these drugs as a public health issue, not a criminal one. The drugs were still illegal, of course. But now getting caught with them meant a small fine and maybe a referral to a treatment program — not jail time and a criminal record. Among Portuguese adults, there are 3 drug overdose deaths for every 1,000,000 citizens. Comparable numbers in other countries range from 10.2 per million in the Netherlands to 44.6 per million in the UK, all the way up to 126.8 per million in Estonia. The EU average is 17.3 per million. more significantly, the report notes that the use of "legal highs" – like so-called "synthetic" marijuana, "bath salts" and the like – is lower in Portugal than in any of the other countries for which reliable data exists. This makes a lot of intuitive sense: why bother with fake weed or dangerous designer drugs when you can get the real stuff? This is arguably a positive development for public health in the sense that many of the designer drugs that people develop to skirt existing drug laws have terrible and often deadly side effects.Drug use and drug deaths are complicated phenomena. They have many underlying causes. Portugal's low death rate can't be attributable solely to decriminalisation. As Dr. Joao Goulao, the architect of the country's decriminalization policy, has said, "it's very difficult to identify a causal link between decriminalisation by itself and the positive tendencies we have seen. Still, it's very clear that decriminalisation hasn't had the severe consequences that its opponents predicted. As the Transform Drug Policy Institute says in its analysis of Portugal's drug laws, "The reality is that Portugal’s drug situation has improved significantly in several key areas. Most notably, HIV infections and drug-related deaths have decreased, while the dramatic rise in use feared by some has failed to materialise." This is from The Independant news in the UK. So the stats seem to prove a lowering of overdoses Long but informative article but proves if the govt doesnt support it with the bucks it wont work Portugal’s Example: What Happened After It Decriminalized All Drugs, From Weed to Heroin | VICE News They still have drug dealers in Portugal so I thought decriminalization is supposed to get rid of them
9. And another thing that pisses me off...they wont do what is necessary to stop real drug barons yet where is legal euthenasia...it should be a right to be able to end your life if you are terminal..also what about still the garbage on medical MJ for cancer patients and kids witth seizures etc etc...its been a WW3 battle and we really still are not there on these SIMPLE fronts yet you want to legalise HARD drugs?......some might think the cart is well before the horse......sorry but got the hairs up on the back of my neck...there are not many subjects that rattle my cage but these 3 are
10. The problem with your solution Marty is all the druggos will still be running around stealing from people to afford to buy their "pharmaceutical grade low priced legalised drugs because they are too stoned to go out and get a job to support them or their families. This is the other conversation all the "make it legal" supporters dont come up with any answers on, how are you then going to get all those current drug users off the drugs not to mention now the drugs are cheaper and "safer" so all the young ones who had the crap frightened out of them about the crap that gets put into street drugs and they are afraid to give them a go either by curiosity or peer group pressure because now they are "SAFE". It wont stop the problem of using drugs it may stop the illegal dealers but I dont believe it will stop the problem at all. The only way to stop it is to cut the supply...make them all go cold turkey or help to get over withdrawls but first you have to make sure there is no supply and to do that you need a incentive...and a good dose of lead poisoning is a good start
11. Sorry I am afraid I like the lead poisoning solution for the drug importers and manufacturers. These guys that bring in 50 million etc in drugs know exactly what they are doing and the consequences should be...sorry bud you no longer have the right to destroy so many peoples lives...isnt there a saying about the few outweighing the many.....a few major drug importers or manufacturers being taken out permanently saves thousands and thousands of peoples lives...isnt that a good thing...then the deterent is for the top end of town in the drug system...not on the users or the ones addicted who then can be assisted to get off the drugs and education can keep others from even going there. Chop the head off the snake so you can then try to fix the rest of the forest. Then again I am no do gooder I am a realist not a fantastist Mark
12. Hi Phil Vinten were a bit before my time I am afraid. I am surprised that you guys still have to pay a TV licence...we used to here but I think it was dropped about 40 years ago. Bloody Plessey MTR42 etc bring me nightmares and Willis radios as well. Willis could make good VHF radios but his UHF were useless and unstable. Worked on FM331 and the old Westons and Philips valve PA radios and a few old Pye Overlanders as well back in the late 70's when I first started tinkering with radios. Worked on lots of Valve Ham radios and big amplifiers but generally all transistor style. Obviously right up to the latest generation smd stuff and some SDR radios. SDR is the future now and they work incredibly well and as the front end D to A chips are just unbelievable now. I am glad I am out of the commercial side of the business now I am getting too old to deal with it all. I love the technology but dont have a lot of desire to get fully into as much. I am happy to repair radios for pin money now and make my own gear. Currently working on modifing Mitec 10 ghz 2 mb link gear for my 10 ghz TX/RX for some moonbounce also for a local 10 ghz beacon. Have a 1 KW UHF fet amp and a 1.5 KW VHF amp single device fet being built now. Both amps are in 1 12U rack unit I made and use a common 50V 65amp powersupply. I have to get back to the airband simplex repeater..I just paid the licence again. Been having a real lot of issues getting the voice recorders working properly from the AM signal..triggering from the mute on all the AM radios is very difficult for some reason. It shouldnt be but it is so this year its one of my major projects I have to get going. I look like now making my own voice recorder and will write some software using a arduino to control it maybe the only way to get it done properly My main programming PC for radiso is Win98 and it still works perfect every time the only issue now is the hardware is dying so have to transfer the HD's across to some more hardware which is a pain but has to be done. Have not tried win 10 on any programming at all but I think its time I upgraded my programming PC to Win XP Pro SP2 though Mark
13. David...I have played with 8 and it is crap...I have played with 10 for a bit and it seems far superior...more like win7...I would go to 10 if it was me
14. We call that PIN money...usually always cash though...its the best type. Here I believe you can earn up to $100 a week without affecting your pension....hahahah who is going to tell the tax office if you do earn more. I am glad I am not the only one hoarding older PC's....
15. Hi Phil The later series of radios that are designed for USB programmers will usually all work fine on Win7 but stuff from only a couple of years ago that use serial port programmers is where the issue is. Windoze wants to control all port activity on the later versions from XP SP3 and its a pain. Also a lot of software the later generation computers are way too fast and wont program a lot of radios either. I keep a Toshiba 1200 dinosaur to program a couple of dinosaur radios also Philips Prm80 series and Motorola GP 300 and Spectras I keep an old 386 laptop for them as they will not program even on a low grade pentium which I use for almost everything. I am always looking out for older Dell or similar PC that have serial ports on them just to make sure I have a collection of them for backup hardware. Why does it all have to be so difficult. You would think as technology gets better it would be easier to do but not so. The pcb design software I used was Protel 98 and it does not like running on Win7 but Win7 does have a addon you can download that allows you to create a VM within win7 that is a microsoft VM..it actually works extremely well for the PCB software although now I have converted over to Eagle and it runs fine on Win7 or on my Imac at work under fusion on Win7. Bloody computers
16. Oh and I love my Mac's but I have to say this Icloud crap is really pissing me off. It is such a nagging pain in the bum and the whole system is tied to it. I dont have it enabled but it keeps nagging every day many times also Itunes is getting worse and more like a virus every day. It is such a pity as the apple stuff before this Icloud sh!t was just soooo good now it is really getting crappy....surely there must be a lot of people complaing to apple about it. Why cant we just have a version without all this big brother stuff
17. Win XP service pack 2 is the only one to use for anything CNC. SP3 made a lot of changes in the way the I/O ports are handled. Radio programming software and CNC serial based software works a treat on SP2 but SP3 has some wierdo stuff in it. Half the radios dont program via the serial port anymore and when running Mach3 sometimes the machine just shoots off and ruins the job. All my CNC stuff and radio stuff runs on XP SP2 or win98 it is far more stable. Win7 has issues programming radios and also on CNC machines. Got Win10 on the Imac's at work in a Fusion Pro VM and I have to say it is very fast also more like Win7 in the GUI. Havent tried it on any real I/O stuff yet but for the general use we use it for it seems to be reasonably good....Win8 is a huge POS Mark
18. I have been sitting back here watching the comments and pontifications....its very bemusing to be honest. How many on this particular thread have actually worked on construction sites for any length of time...or in a process industrial line or a mine site, driven trucks or high voltage electrical distribution sites or infrastructure and many of the other industries that require OH&S. My working life has spanned pretty much 40 plus years and in all of the work environments I stated above. At least half I think commenting here are white collar and take the role of "safety officer". Now I am not saying it is not necessary and there does need to be some safety supervision on all sites but it really has got way out of control, no one seems to use "COMMON SENSE" anymore they always try to blame someone else...what ever happened to taking responsibility for your own actions. I used to jump through all the hoops when having to do stupid site inductions and wear all the flashy vests and head and glasses protection because that has been the way it has been heading this past 15 to 20 years. Before that life was easier we got far more work done in the same time and did not waste money in day long inductions and risk management paperwork crap. I can tell you hundreds of stories about how stupid all this is and just how out of control it has become but one in particular comes to mind and it relates to time and costs exploding also stupidity of OH&S. I was asked to quote to supply and install a satellite telephone system into a new multi story building for their system control section incase phone line failed etc..mainly for times of disaster. I supplied a quote after going to the site and just walking in and going up to the 7th floor and into the plant rooms to see where to mount the antenna then run a coax down the riser to the comms cubical where the satphone would reside and out of it was a 2 wire interface that went into the MDF and this 2 wire went to the control room for a phone line. The building was not too far from being finished. I quoted a price which was $4000 to supply the satphone and base station antenna and mount with the low loss coax and allowed 3 hours to do the install which would have been a comfortable time to do the job. I gave them the quote and waited....knew I would get the job because I was the only one in Qld who could do the job and be supported by the satphone carrier when it comes to support and warranty especially for a govt organisation. Now remember I went to site no induction did NOT have fluro clothes on but did have a hard hat and was never challenged even after being in the site office talking to the bosses about necessary information I needed. Turns out the next week the building was "handed over" to owner who by the way was long term leasing the whole building to this govt Quango. So I organise a time to go there and the site manager...who I had seen 1 week before says ok now I need to see your "white card" before you enter also you will need to have a induction. So I said no you just supply me with a "angel" and I will be done in 3 hours. No sorry you will need a white card. Ok no probs I rang the govt dept up and said sorry I cant do the job now as I dont have a white card and will NOT get one as I dont want to spend 6 hrs doing a crap course online and a 5 hr induction you will have to find someone else...cya later. next day I get a call from the satphone carrier (one of the big 3 telcos here in OZ) the Qld manager..he says you have to do the job...I said no I dont so not interested find someone else. He says there is no one else...I said I dont care I will NOT jump through bullsh!t hoops. 2 days after I get a call from the national satellite ops manager for the carrier asking me if I would reconsider and I said no. He rings the next day and says how much will it take for you to make it worth your while. I said I will think about it, he then says just come up with a price and refax your quote to them. So I thought about it and thought bugger it if they want to make me jump through this crap they will pay for every bit of my time and effort. So I worked out that I would need to spend at least 12 hrs doing inductions and courses then knowing what I knew there would invariably be more than one trip needed to site and all the other crap getting in and out. So I faxed them a new quote for $8000 and I had a return acceptance within 10 mins. I thought my new quote would have frightened them off but I wasnt ripping them off this was the extra costs for my time to jump through all their bullsh!t. So I then had to go online and do my white card then go to site get the 5 hr induction done then do the job and yes 3 trips to the site dealing with stuff not being ready when it was supposed to be. Now NOTHING had changed onsite as regards to the people onsite or even really the site. This is the madness of it all. Its such a money wasting exercise in most cases it is so frustrating. I continued my company for another 4 years before selling it at the beginning of 2015 and NEVER used the white card again and so glad I dont have to deal with this sh!t anymore. The company I work for now has common sense about real safety and we all look after each other in the workshop in regards to it. If I see anyone even attempting to anything unsafe or operate any machinery unsafely then they get a ripping and modify their practices and it just works and when everyone at the place which consists of 10 people do this then we NEVER have any work related accidents Mark
19. Putin and his tactical nukes maybe employed sooner than later
20. Yes I think poor old Andrew will be beside himself...I am sure he used to dream of sleeping at the foot of Tony's bed
21. Thats why I did 2 laps around the circuit at the signed speed first to see if there were any policeman's ball ticket collectors about.....then gave it the noise :) Well as much as you can in a huge Iveco diesel..which wasnt much...sigh. Just wish I was in the HSV R8 that I had at the time Mark
22. I NEVER NEVER put that E10 crap into any vehicle. Even the old dunnydore gets the 95 . My mrs had had to be seriously chatted to about making sure she uses 91 or higher prefer 95 when she fills up her 2013 Kia cerato....E10 eats rubber and seals its just crap produced becuase off people whinging about fuel prices. In the 6ltr V8 dunny door I only ever used 98 and got awesome economy. I used to get 9.4 litres per 100 km from a 400 hp V8 on a trip. Of course only 98 in the Rotax The other cars are a Iveco daily van and a Kia Sportage AWD both are turbo diesels and they rock..super economy as well.
23. I think it actually says that children under the age of 12 or 13 are NOT to occupy a front seat because the airbag deployment can kill them...hence probably the 25 deaths. Ipersonally think immunization is a good thing...and all those that dont get their kids done are not living in the real world...shall I say more...Nimbinites etc
24. Well don't forget that the earth was seeded by aliens and they have been watching us for millennium. You never know the "boss" could drop in one day....disclosure is coming they say
