  1. Well, maybe 2019 will be a better year than 2015/16/17/18. We received a phone call from the vet this afternoon. We had paid $230 for an additional pathology test to be done. It turns out that Bella has a rather rare form of lymphoma. Instead of the normal T-cell version, hers is low grade B-cell, and instead of affecting her whole lymphatic system, this version may be limited to the one node. So there is a chance, only a chance, that they may have got it all, and she may have a more normal lifespan. She has been placed on steroid tablets for a few weeks, rather than chemo which was quoted at approximately $10,000. We have to check her for lumps on the nodes daily, and have regular checkups with the vet.

  2. Doesn't look too bad on GEM here in Melbourne, Willie, but I'm no expert.

My son is off to Hobart next Saturday to be linesman at the Hobart International, then back to Melbourne Tuesday night to start his 17th Oz Open. Hate the black uniforms - what a colour to choose for Melbourne's hot January days.

  3. Thank you for your touching and informative post, Geoff. Give Koby a pat and scratch behind the ear for me.

As you say, "if you have the means". Unfortunately I don't. I've even had to put my own heart medication on the slate because I didn't have the cash to pay for it. It breaks my heart and reduces me to tears to hear Bella cry. I'm sure she knows what's happening and that she doesn't have much time with us. She is happy sitting on the couch with me stroking and petting her, or sleeping by my wife's feet, but cries when put to bed in the laundry with our other dog Roxy, where she has slept since we got her as a puppy. I think Roxy knows what is going on as well.Dogs have a sixth sense about these things.

  4. I think I told you of the disasters which occurred this time last year, with hail storms that damaged cars and the house. Then there was the collision which wrote off our small car, and the ducted heating packing up at the start of last winter. Then late in November, my daughter woke one morning to find the cat had died in her bedroom overnight. During the week before Christmas my daughter noticed a swelling on the tummy of our 5 year old Spoodle. We took the dog to the vet who removed the lump ($1300) and sent it for pathology. Got the result yesterday. Lymphoma - incurable. Prognosis - weeks, maybe a few months, but not years. How much longer can this continue?

  5. I received a lengthy email yesterday regarding the renewable power generation. It said the biggest problem is that the distribution grid was built to cater for coal mines and coal power generation, and is a long way from wind farms, solar farms or hydro schemes. The power generated by these renewable schemes cannot be fed into the grid, and some are generating power that cannot be used, without overloading the distribution system.

  6. A girl went to enter the church in a see-through blouse.

The priest stopped her and said, "You can't come in here dressed like that."

She said, "I have a divine right."

The priest replied, "You have a divine left, too, but you still can't come in dressed like that."

  7. A report on Sunday Sunrise, that Port Pirie, SA, has set up micro grids (a street or suburban block), where all rooftop solar panels are linked to a community battery. Residents supply or draw power as required. This greatly reduces their reliance on the state grid, and has almost halved their electricity bills. They spoke to one senior resident who claims he can now afford to take his first holiday in years. Promoted by a local councillor.

  8. Discussion on the ABC the other night - when a crash is inevitable, and someone is most likely going to be killed, should we leave it up to a driverless car to decide who dies? I missed the beginning, so I don't know if this was an actual or hypothetical situation, but they were discussing a situation where a mother and child in the car died when it crashed to avoid three drunks on the road. The "expert" on the panel said cars could be programmed to recognise faces and decide who should be saved - in a fraction of a second. I think the program was called Tomorrow Today.
