The French were thrown out by the Japs in WW2 and the Vietnamese didn't want them back, when the war ended. That was the French war, which ended in defeat for the French in the battle of Dien Bien Phu or something like that. The Yanks were afraid that the domino theory was going to resul in all Asia becoming communist, so they started the Viet Nam war with a string of lies and continued it for years with more and more lies about how they were winning, right up to the day they were thrown out.
