octave Posted yesterday at 09:32 AM Posted yesterday at 09:32 AM I was just reminded by an article about an event 50 years ago today. I was growing up in Adelaide, and I was 13 years old. The Dunstan government had just decriminalised homosexuality, being the first state to do so. A religious nutter who claimed to be a clairvoyant predicted that this would cause a tidal wave on this day at midday, and it would wipe out Adelaide. Although apparently some took it seriously, a few sold their houses and moved, it was mostly treated a little more lightheartedly. Some workers turned up to their jobs in flippers and floaties. I can remember "I survived the Adelaide tidal wave" T-shirts. The Premier, the colourful Don Dunstan, stood on a balcony at Glenelg saying if the tidal wave came, he would turn it back. 3
onetrack Posted yesterday at 10:35 AM Posted yesterday at 10:35 AM Ha ha! That's classic! I don't recall anything about it, possibly because I was working in some remote location, and didn't have access to newspapers or TV. What I find even funnier, is the clairvoyant religious nutter has the same name as my brother! 😄
red750 Posted yesterday at 11:16 AM Posted yesterday at 11:16 AM I can't say I remember it, I was living in Sydney at the time, but had lived in Adelaide for 3 months in 1972, on a temporary posting in the bank. 1
nomadpete Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago Well it was on the news in Steak-n-kidney. I clearly recall laughing my head off about it. At the time I wished I could go down to Adelaide to sit on that beach - would have been some party! (Of sceptics) 2
onetrack Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago If I had a dollar, every time some feted clairvoyant, religious nutter, or other predictor of doom and gloom, made a worldwide announcement, that a huge cataclysmic event was going to happen on a certain day (usually the end of the world), then I'd have enough money for a decent holiday! 1
facthunter Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Every ONE of the Predictions of the World's END have Been WRONG. Ronnie RAYGUN said "WE are in the LAST DAYS". THAT means there's NO Point in looking after the World. GWBush was a Born again Drug Addict. who said "The AMERICAN WAY of LIFE is Not On the Table" . Nev 1 1
facthunter Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago HAS HE PREDICTED the End of the World? WE expect him to CAUSE it. Nev
