Many years ago I use to follow F1 quit heavily however having nearly all races in the middle of the night whilst also going to work I lost interest as I became sleep deprived however last year I renewed my interest in F1 being able to watch all races, through Kayo, and not being able to work.

 

The other thing is having a great Australian kid in Oscar Piastri representing Australia to the world driving a Mclaren has been great to watch, becoming an Australian hero to all of us that are into F1.

 

Anyway I imagined what it would be like to Australia if Oscar's car in the Melbourne Grand Prix was painted in the iconic Australian Green and Gold. What a marketing success it would be. So I created a mock up of one:

Well, Oscar will start from position 5, in row 3. Pole position went to George Russell from Mercedes.

 

The big shock was Kimi Antonelli, who starts from P2. In practice earlier in the day, he virtually wrote off his car in a wild spin and crash.

 

 

Not only did they rebuild the car in a couple of hours so he could take part in qualifying, he got the second best time to start from P2. Standby cars are not allowed.

 

Lawson (Mercedes) is on P1, Antonelli (Mercedes)is P2, Hadjar (Red Bull) P3, Leclerk (Ferrari) P4, Piastri (McLaren) P5, Norris (McLaren) P6 . Max Verstappen spun out and did not set a time, so will start at the back of the grid.

I am not into F1, but a mates son is in college doing engineering and has an placement on a scheme run by the F1 teams to bring on the next round of engineers. All he has wanted to do in his teenage years is work on F1 cars, so best of luck to him. 

 

I saw a headline on the Age' website quoting Piastri as sayingthe Mercs are just too quick.. Not sure in what context, but that doesn't bode well for McLarens. 

 

A bit of trivia.. My old home airport, Fairoaks, was right next to the McLarens Technology centre, where they did most oftheir F1 development:

Up till now the McLarens had it almost to themselves. I will have to watch it because it IS the Ultimate technology with the Worlds best  drivers.   Nev

The new cars are smaller, lighter & are hybrids with a 50/50 split between internal combustion & electric power & use 100% sustainable fuels. The drivers have to manage the power split now. 

 

I've watched the Formula E cars a couple of times & they have  incredible acceleration but races are shorter due to battery constraints but now the Gen 3 versions are 4WD & allow for fast charging pit stops of 600kW

That change to the power system has caught Oscar out, resulting in a crash putting him out of the race before it starts. Crashed in the formation lap.

Not a good weekend for me. Carlton lost and me sitting here with my OP81 shirt on and he doesnt even get a chance to start the race 😭

It's hard to react to that post.. Sad for Piastri.. But a Carltion loss is always sweet 🙂

 

Hawks flopped as well..just not so spectactularly...

Could've been worse - like the bloke in Perth last year, who bought tickets for the 3rd day of the big international cricket match between the Aussies and the Poms, and it was all over, Red Rover, on Day Two!
