Can the US ever recover from the damage over the last 10 years?

I post a link to a video tweeted by Donald Trump showing the Democrats' dismissive reaction to his SOTU address last week. It is set to REM's song,"Everybody Hurts". I think that Trump was able to carry off successfully the mission that Tony Abbott hadn't the ability to do. That is to permanently divide the electorate and allow disintegration of the bonds of nationhood. We are witnessing the complete disintegration of America as a united people. A nation divided has no chance of survival. I believe that the Clinton Democrats are responsible for this "deplorable" state of affairs.

How do you figure that? My sources say the rot started with Newt Gingrich and all the Republicans who believe the wealthy should pay less tax and the government should go deeper in debt to allow this.

Remember, Clinton balanced the budget. The last Republican president to do that was Eisenhower in the 1950s. America's government debt really expanded under Reagan and is now so eye-wateringly large there is little hope of ever getting it under control- especially now that the US$ is almost finished as a world currency.

The belief that greed and profit are "everything" and if you aren't a winner you are nothing has produced the America of Today. The "society" as such is downplayed and importance on ACHIEVERS in the strictly limited "Consumer" sense is substituted for CLASS and non achievers in the money sense, are vilified. America still suffers from a "return to New Slavery" ethic where the acutely poor will do just about anything to survive at a subsistence level. This props up a lot of businesses that would otherwise not be there.

Lots of Guns, Police excesses, Death penalty. High incarceration of non whites. Restricted ability of many to exercise voting rights Old Infrastructure aging and not up to capacity. Getting worse not better. Trust in Government LOW. Cost of litigation prohibitive Democracy under crisis as "misleading" is a developing art form.

USA in it's collective mind, just cannot allow any other Country's government to assume a challenging position to It's world dominance Role. It won't share power with anyone.. It interferes in other nations business and bullies socialistic governments...That can only have ONE outcome. WORLD CONFLICT and everyone knows that. . INEVITABLE. and it should be so ridiculous as to be ruled out by all but the totally insane and power mad nutters that see it as an answer.. Nev

From what I see and hear the USA is a sick society. The poor are poorer than the poor in Australia and the rich are obscene. Most of their resources go on weapons of war and without a nice big war for them, the day of reckoning is getting closer. USA needs a war to distract its own people and all the coat tail hangers on, or it will just sink into oblivion, like the British empire and the Roman and Ottoman empires before them.

Is it true that the total USA arms budget exceeds that of the rest of the world combined together?

True that Clinton produced a small surplus partly because of large tax increases on the wealthy but also an equal if not more powerful influence was the booming economy and huge gains in the stock markets, the so-called dot-com bubble. However he never succeeded in wiping out govt debt which has boomed especially under Republican presidents. ( I stated "the Clinton Democrats" which includes madam and her demonstrated ability to control the modern DNC.)

However, my point is that the prospect of the US population ever finding a unifying, common aim is disappearing rapidly as the Reps and Dems strive to drive wedges between their support base. This is politics played to the bitter end. We see the result in some African countries or regimes such as Romania under Nicolae Ceaușescu or Germany under the Nazis. Not in modern times in a prosperous Western nation. FH has summarised well the poor state of the American people in latter years.

I have heard it said that the rise in common wealth of the middle class in Western nations from WW2 to the mid 70's had to do with rapid industrialisation and the competition between capitalist and Eastern socialist economies. Once Soviet style communism was defeated the middle class began to fall backwards. The rich became rapidly richer as the rest fell backwards.
