  1. Why don't "believers" leave more to their god in the punishment dept? Surely being tortured every day for eternity is a lot of punishment? Could it just be that inflicting hurt is good fun?
  2. I still don't understand how it works. The new US senate leader says that teaching evolution causes gun violence, so he is a right-wing loony in my estimation. Yet the democrats could have got in a better person, gosh the outgoing guy was only thrown out by democrat votes. The only sense I can make of it is that the democrats really want the republicans to expose themselves and lose future elections.
  3. On a similar note, did you know that genuine black-belt hari krishnas could levitate? Unfortunately, unbelievers give off bad vibes and so they can't show unbelievers. I am in awe of this logic.
  4. Aha ! Silly me for thinking they were just unable to do so. Now if yours truly could only know, all the regulars to this forum would get rich, well after i did anyway.
  5. Here's a bit of trivia...Q: How do you make extra-virgin olive oil? A: From extra-ugly olives.
  6. Bugger, red, there is fine print as with all things. I never thought of that catch.
  7. The trouble with real mystics is that they can't forsee the cross-lotto resuls.
  8. I just googled esperanto and they are still going.
  9. Well at least English has no genders attached.... German, for example, has 3 genders and if you get it wrong, the whole sentence is buggered. Is anybody old enough to remember Esperanto? It was an attempt to make a modern language but not enough people were interested.
  10. It may actually have been $3,000 ...gosh, I don't remember yet I really owned one.
  11. In South Australia, they ( the govt, led by a right-wing extremist guy called John Ohlsen) sold off the old housing trust houses for as little as $30,000 each. Then there was a terrible shortage of assisted houses, so they introduced priorities. You had to be a single parent with a drug problem and on parole to get a house. So these houses became part of areas where people were rightfully afraid of getting murdered by their neighbors. The "bodies in the barrels" cases came from this sort of place. I dunno what has happened lately, I hope somebody will tell me things are better now.
  12. Death duties ( inheritance tax ) is a no-brainer. Of course we need one. In Australia, I remember well how silly old farts moved to Qld so as to keep their money away from the taxman. For awhile, Bjelke-Peterson's Qld was the only place in Aust where there was no inheritance tax. Even though we knew it was wrong, we all approved of our state govt giving up this tax. If you want to subsidize your kids, do it while you are alive says me. Then you will appreciate their gratitude. AND, there are cunning ways to avoid the tax anyway.... for example, a farm can become incorporated and the shares can be ownership shares ( give these to the kids ) and management shares ( keep these for yourself ).
  13. There was a teacher who used to say "pull yourselves together boys" when we were unruly.
  14. Yep Nev, suicide bombers ( I reckon they MIGHT pass the test if they were truly not coerced ) are about 17 years old. I dunno if they are reasonably counted though.... they might have been brainwashed.
  15. I reckon that lots of "believers" are nothing of the sort. Personally, I used to tick the "c of e " box because I reckoned this would keep me out of trouble the best. SO... here i modestly proclaim "Tuncksies test of true belief" which means that you need to do something which makes no sense in this world if you did not believe. Anonymously giving all your money to the poor would pass my test. Getting to be the headmaster of a church school fails for sure. Alas, I don't actually know anybody who truly believes.
  16. Here's the trouble with autocrats... they have to murder to get in, then to stay in. So you are ruled by the best murderer around. But how do they change over? If this problem can be solved, it might be that autocrats will become more common. In Nth Korea, I notice that they have dealt with the problem of the old guy dying with pure denial!
  17. Nope marty, but everything I plant goes brown. I call it brown thumbs as opposed to green ones.
  18. my super power is brown thumbs. I read about people with green ones with envy.
  19. I reckon this site is by far the best place to get good technical advice with the minimum of commercially-driven people. I have never been disappointed. And, there are questions which I reckon are non-trivial, ( like why do the democrats not support the least-objectionable republican ) which I really want to know about, and this is the best site around for that too.
  20. Can somebody please explain this to me.... it seems to my uneducated mind that the most moderate of the republicans should be supported by the democrats and easily win the vote. Since there is nothing like this happening, I must be missing some information.
  21. Thanks willedoo.
  22. Me too ( as per nomadpete) old K... I always liked your posts.
  23. A very long time ago, there was a religious guy came on here. I think he was ( properly and politely ) ridiculed out. I personally take some of the blame, I started to ask about the firmament etc, things which demonstrated those biblical writers limited education.
  24. In Benghazi, there is a hotel called the "Omar Khayam" hotel and I have actually stayed there so this all must be correct huh.
  25. I reckon that old Omar was the world's first athiest.... he wrote "And that inverted bowl we call the sky, "whereunder crawling cooped we live and die... Raise not your hands for IT to help, "for it rolls impotently on as thou and I" and, much later " Who is the potter, pray, and who the pot?" For many years, I thought that the translator was an atheist who only pretended to translate so he would not be killed for thinking such blasphemous stuff himself. But Fitzgerald was only one of many translators so that makes old Omar the world's first atheist. Here's a bit of trivia.... many more soldiers in WW1 had a copy of the rubaiyat of Omar Khayam than ever carried a bible, and quite right too, says I. WW1 marked the end of Christendom as a place on earth.
