A friend was telling me that his wife wrote a letter to one of their granddaughters, who is in high school. The girl had to ask a teacher to read the letter for her because the girl could not read "running writing".

Don’t be surprised if lots of young teachers can’t either.

Even though I’m an old bugger who learned to write with ink pens, I have trouble reading my mum’s WWII diaries.

I'm voting No just on the question.

far too open ended and no real policy.
I cant support a "we will figure out how it works later" approach.

    worked great for Brexit....

why cant they just table the bill.
and have it vote yes or no the voice amendment as presented to Parliament by xyz MP on the X/X/2022

A referendum is require because it’s inserting an amendment into our Constitution to recognise our country’s original inhabitants and provide for them to have the ear of government (Coca Cola and lots of foreign corporations have much more influence than the Voice is ever likely to).
NZ did this long ago, but went much further, setting aside special seats in Parliament for Indig.
Did that caused the NZ sky to fall?

Like everything in the Constitution, the wording is brief and concise. Read it and you’ll see.

    I suppose I'm vulnerable. I log on to the Bank website 2 or 3 times a day…

That’s the sort of exposure to hackers that I want to reduce; even if I use a “secure” network, eventually the parasites are likely to find a way to “eavesdrop”.

In addition to MS Access, I also maintained and rewrote an online reference system on the superannuation admin company intranet. The company handled all back office functions for 8 or 9 industry super funds, and call centre CSO's could handle up to 4 funds. The system allowed a CSO to call up what was essentially an online member guide for a fund, or reference to legal requirements, to answer member enquiries.

I’d like to see someone develop a safer way for us mere mortals to regularly check our bank accounts, in case some low-life has been stealing our money.

Currently, the only way to do so is log in, exposing all our security info. That makes us vulnerable to hackers.

There’s a big security difference between looking at our money and getting our hands on it.

...In other words, the US tax payer is going to pay through the nose in order for America to be the world police.

That analogy is long out of date. The US is mainly concerned with protecting its investments, not fostering world peace.

  6. Watch the Mig (or was it a Sukhoi) doing that impressive plonk-down landing.

The video artist put in some vague shadows as it skimmed the sea surface, but not a ripple from the massive blast of its jet exhausts.

Turkey's Erdogan has said Turkey doesn’t recognise the annexation of Crimea. He said Crimea is a part of Ukraine and Turkey maintains their support to Ukraine’s territorial integrity. He also called on Russia to release imprisoned Crimean Tatar leaders.

Hard to see Russia ever giving up its claim to Crimea, even if they’re pushed out. Perhaps a final solution should be some sort of Autonomous Region that recognised the ancient claims of the Tatars. The USSR included lots of subdivisions that supposedly gave some local control to many of its ethnic minorities.

At my age, I have no ambitions that require  lot of money, so I don't need to draw on the equity (100%), and am living comfortably on the pension, with virtually no debt. I may not be cash rich, but I am comfortable.

Me too Red, but don’t be surprised when the rules are changed to push us old farts out of our big old houses. Baby Boomers who own their home are comfortable and protected by tax rules, while many young are struggling to get a start. I predict a move to scale back age discounts and subsidies. One day, a brave government will scrap negative gearing and protections of the family home.

Lock me up and throw away the key! That's the only way to deal with a highway hoon!

I just got this happy snap from the NSW preservers of motorists' lives. They want me to pay $128.00 for the negatives.  I got pinged in the same place for a similar small overspeeding a few months ago.

At the time I was coming to the top of Victoria Pass. This is the start at the bottom of the pass. It is a very, very steep climb and

It's a busy road and trucks just grind up it.

It even has this quant 19th Century two lane bridge to negotiate.

I'll be going to Sydney in the first week of September, and this time I am going to sit on 40 kph all the way up and hope I cause a bloody long back up of traffic. Too bad that I'll be going down mid-week. I should di it about 1:30 pm on a Sunday afternoon and really piss people off.

I crossed that same old bridge on Wednesday in a truck loaded with classic motorcycles.

I find the idea attractive, especially when I remember how it feels to have the front tyre let go.

I’d like to see front end up close; it looks like impressive engineering.

Australia's problem is that the only idea people have about utilising our native resources is to be extractive. No thought is given to identifying what is useful and then learning how to manage the resource sustainably...

Once again we have wasted decades during which we could have 'domesticated' a natural resource and possibly helped preserve it.

I protest! My grandad managed State Forests sustainably; they would still be yielding logs and supporting a thriving timber industry if Bob Carr and others had not turned them into National Parks.

That’s been a theme of my life, Nev.

Not complaining too hard though; who’d want to be rich or famous?
