Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance explained how she believes the Trump White House’s buyout offer to all federal employees will backfire. President Donald Trump “summoned the sleeping giant” of the civil service with the proposal that has drawn skepticism over its validity from critics, Vance warned in her “Civil Discourse” email newsletter. Vance noted how in some cases ― detailed in online posts by federal workers ― it had actually appeared to spur them into staying in their roles to “hold the line” against Trump. “On Reddit last night, it was clear that a sizeable number of federal employees are digging in for the fight,” wrote Vance. “Donald Trump has always fantasized about a deep state inside of government that opposes him, something that didn’t exist,” she added. “Now, he is well on the way to creating one. It turns out federal employees take their oath, their job, and their duty to serve very seriously.”

Here's a random thought. What a different sort of night. I was sitting in the family room watching the Sri Lanka test and reading Facebook and the forums. At about 8:40, total darkness - a power blackout. It had been 34 deg today and was still quite hot.I had a fan on and it died of course. Emergency action. I have a couple of small LED torches, about 10 cm long, powered by 2AA batteries and a lens about 2.5 cm diameter. I placed it to shine down the neck of a bottle of water which diffused the light so we could move about without bumping into things, and for brighter light, had the torch on my iPhone, which fortunately had been fully charged earlier this afternoon, The Wi-Fi went out with the lighhts, so no TV or computer. So I just laid on the bed feeling stinking hot. The power supply company (not the billing supplier) texted to say they were aware of the outage and said it should be back by 2 am. In fact, it came back on at 10:50, just before my daughter got home from the women's cricket test at the MCG.

The pastor’s wife was expecting their baby, so one Sunday, he stood before the congregation and made a request: He asked for a raise. After much deliberation, the church passed a policy: whenever the pastor’s family grew, so would his salary. At first, it seemed reasonable, but after six children, the situation became expensive. Concerned about the church’s finances, the congregation scheduled another meeting to discuss the pastor’s growing paycheck. A heated debate followed. There was much shouting and disagreement over the cost of the pastor’s expanding family and the potential strain on the church’s budget. After listening to the uproar for about an hour, the pastor stood up and addressed everyone: “Children are a blessing from God, and we will accept all the blessings He sends our way.” The room fell silent. From the back pew, an elderly woman slowly rose to her feet. Her voice was frail but clear as she said: “Rain is also a gift from God, but when we get too much of it, we wear rubbers.” The entire congregation responded in unison: “Amen.”
