  1. I'm looking for an android app that will listen to my seiko 5 watch and tell me if it's fast or slow. Watchmakers have expensive machines that can do this. I'm told that android apps can do it too. I've downloaded and installed 4 such apps (yes, 4) and none are suitable. Some turn out to be a simple reminder to once a day check your watch. Others listen, maybe, but I can't make sense of their interfaces. Something free would be good, and easy to use. Thanks
  2. I've seen the SA Education Dept up close, so no-one will ever convince me this country isn't corrupt.
  3. I can't imagine the world without Bowie.
  4. well done, that's what I need to do. Is there any particular trick that's worked for you?
  5. Worked on lots of engines but never a Fergy. Presumably the testing for the head included for cracks? The water pump idea sounds feasible. At least you don't have to decide if you can make it to the strip or not when this engine fails.
  6. obviously the roadside can get pretty busy there, if you know what I mean.
  7. eat less, drink less, exercise more, fly more.
  8. I like the signs that say "give way to trains".
  9. yes that's true, LPG cheap in cities but pricey in regional areas.
  10. I'm sceptical about claims that any LPG system can deliver the same fuel economy as petrol. I've owned several LPG cars (with mixer systems, inc. a AUIII Falcon Futura wagon, great car) and they drink the stuff. Yes I know the LPG injection systems are better but you can't get away from the fact that the energy density of LPG in Mj/L is 15-20% less than that of petrol. You can't get blood out of a stone.
  11. our 2007 Pajero diesel is a great towing vehicle. V reliable, economical, drives well. One silly design fault is where the spare is: right in the middle at the back; it should be off to one side. So you may need a spare wheel lift kit if you fit a towbar. They are very capable off and on road.
  12. white would be better for reflecting heat, but black is better for stopping UV degradation, is my guess.
  13. I remember when Warren Willing was clocked at 299kph on a, I think, OW31, a version of a TZ750, in the rain, on Conrd Straight. And he later said that he was struggling to control the wheelspin. I think that was 1978.
  14. downunder of course was the man I was going to recommend.... it's bound to be successful: you'll be in so much pain down there for the rest of your life, you'll never be able to perform again....
  15. thought you wanted a recommendation for someone to do the snip on you. if so, PM me, I know a good man.
  16. not the reply you wanted, but congrats on getting this position.
  17. yes, all this talk about how it won't be so bad is a worry. I think the full impact when it hits will be worse than lots of people expect.
  18. I'm not sure who this is addressed to, but I lived in the US for 5 yrs and, generally, loved it. There are things there that drive you mad, but that's true here and everywhere else too. There's a long list of positives about the US and its people, IMHO.
  19. sorry, I don't agree with everything you say, the same services in Australia can cost a lot less. A visit to the dentist cost me the same in both places, but the CT scan I mentioned in another post cost x3 in the US. Inpatient procedures can be a lot more expensive there.
  20. exactly, you're summed them up nicely. Gawande's book is all about that. He's a surgeon, and seems quite amazed at how useful checklists are.
  21. yeah, insurance covered 100%, and my insurance had a deal with the hospital that whatever the bill, they would pay 66% in full settlement, so why wouldn't the hospital grossly inflate the price. A CT scan that here is <$1000 cost $3500. And the bureaucracy around health there is unbelievable. Atul Gawande has written a very good book on it, The Checklist Manifesto, in which he extensively compares aviation with health. We could start a new thread on that subject. Aviation always comes up looking great compared with health. What we have, and health emphatically doesn't, is CRM.
  22. anyone who says US health isn't more expensive than here hasn't got sick there. I've had the experience. Overnight in the ER cost US$11k back in 1999.
  23. it sounds simple, but I doubt a govt dept like SA motor vehicles could cope even with that.
