  1. The version I heard of that is: What is the most dangerous activity undertaken by mankind? Sleeping - do you realise how many people DIE in their sleep? As for the bed - I'm sure there was a guy in Florida recently that would agree with you.......... Now THAT was truly "random". It has however given me a better way of explaining that "Zero Harm/Zero Incidents" that management go on about is not possible when there are "Non-Zero" risk profiles involved, including random events and the frailty of the human mind and body. There was simply NO way of placing any controls on that incident.
  2. I don't have that issue. I suspect you may have a bit of malware that is designed to do exactly that. They are called "smart tags". A quick Google search gave this as a solution http://gnwda.org/removesmarttags.htm
  3. That is exactly what it is. Brings me to the other point about doing this trip, make sure you are physically fit enough for it. The big killer in the outback is lack of preparation, including your health. Water = estimated days x number of people x 10 litres x 2 (to allow time for someone doing the same trip to rescue you!) I've been 4WDing for the better part of 30 years, and going on camping holidays since I was 6 (45 yrs). You see the stories of people that "made it" with a poorly equipped vehicles and little preparation and come to the realisation after a while that these are the exceptions, not the rule.
  4. http://www.exploroz.com/ A good place to start for trip planning. Note that most of the outback (the good spots via the scenic routes you described) is best done in a 4WD with a good deal of preparation. Think Toyota Landcruiser or Nissan Patrol, ideally a diesel, as a base vehicle, because if you EVER need parts (more than likely enroute) you will have difficulty sourcing parts for anything else in the outback. Do not attempt this area in any of the modern SUV type vehicles. A 100 km drive along any of the roads out there will give you more than enough reason not to. (Dead vehicles on the side of the road - too much money to tow back home so they are insurance writeoffs). Most hire companies will not hire to outback areas (ie, you bend you spend on REPAIRS/REPLACEMENT if taken there, as you are out of acceptable area of usage = NO INSURANCE). From what you have described, your best bet would be to fly to Alice/Ayers, across to BNE then to SYD. Alice to Ayers can be done in a bus (~ 4 hrs IIRC)
  5. Two stroke diesel? Here's one... http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/80219/.html and Snopes take on it http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=69270
  6. Appreciate the reasons why I did not do most of my New Years Resolutions last year......................... and improve it to the point at which I do not do ANY of this years resolutions.
  7. CHRISTMAS RISK ASSESSMENT All employees planning to dash through the snow in a one horse open sleigh, going over the fields and laughing all the way are advised that a Risk Assessment will be required addressing the safety of an open sleigh for members of the public. This assessment must also consider whether it is appropriate to use only one horse for such a venture, particularly where there are multiple passengers. Please note that permission must also be obtained in writing from the Traditional Landowners before their fields may be entered. To avoid offending those not participating in celebrations, we would request that laughter is moderate only and not loud enough to be considered a noise nuisance. Benches, stools and orthopaedic chairs are now available for collection by any shepherds planning or required to watch their flocks at night. While provision has also been made for remote monitoring of flocks by CCTV cameras from a centrally heated shepherd observation hut, all users of this facility are reminded that an emergency response plan must be submitted to account for known risks to the flocks. The angel of the Lord is additionally reminded that, prior to shining his/her glory all around, s/he must confirm that all shepherds are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to account for the harmful effects of UVA, UVB and the overwhelming effects of Glory. Following last year's well-publicised case, everyone is advised that Equal Opportunities legislation prohibits any comment with regard to the redness of any part of Mr R Reindeer. Further to this, exclusion of Mr R Reindeer from reindeer games will be considered discriminatory and disciplinary action will be taken against those found guilty of this offence. While it is acknowledged that gift bearing is a common practice in various parts of the world, particularly the Orient, everyone is reminded that the bearing of gifts is subject to Hospitality Guidelines and all gifts must be registered. Note that the bearing of arms in the US although a Constitutional right, is deemed inappropriate at this time of the year and is not considered an appropriate response to other people's failure to bear gifts. This applies regardless of the individual, even royal personages. It is particularly noted that direct gifts of currency or gold are specifically precluded, while caution is advised regarding other common gifts such as aromatic resins that may evoke allergic reactions. Finally, in the recent instance of the infant found tucked up in a manger without any crib for a bed, Dept of Child Welfare have been advised and may be arriving within the next month...or so. Enjoy the holiday season!
  8. .....or the Benny Hill classic "What is that on the road a/head?" ("a head" or "ahead") Insert a comma somewhere in the middle.... What, is that on the road ahead? What is that, on the road ahead? What is that on, the road ahead? What is that on the road, a head?

  13. Slight point of order... It was showing microbes before DNA strands.... You need DNA in the first place to make up the proteins of the organelles of microbes and to transfer the code form one cell to two during cell division (mitosis).
  14. .............and what makes you think that???? Kia Sportage, 2" spring lift, 2" body lift, 31" tyres, chipped, etc......

I've also go a list of "intelligent" questions on paper, along with prepared "your best points/worst points" (areas for improvement...), along with achievements.
  16. Thanks for that, now done..
  17. There is NOTHING on earth I hate more than waiting for a phone call. The phone call I am waiting for is a phone interview for a job = nervous as all ............................(you know what). There is nothing worse than not having eye contact with the person you are talking to. Anyone else been through this hell? Any tips? Looking like it will be FIFO to 120 km north of Tennant Creek NT. Half an hour and counting........ (12:30)

  21. Telstra 3G via satellite from WA Goldfields area to Melbourne switching point has had more ups and downs than a 16 hr "prono" flick over the last couple of days. Not sure if it's our equipment or Telstra Vic.
