  1. Somewhere in my library I have a book about ancient glass lenses. The Egyptians had telescopes and theodolites of a sort, very convincing analysis. I must find it and read it again.

  2. Turbs, I am fascinated by the rise of ancient civilisations and cultures but have ben too lazy to research them as you have done. Where should I start reading? Bear in mind that I am not a young bloke and need to make the best use of the time available!

  3. Latest research is also showing that rain follows the plough, as they said in South Australia. Minute organic particles causing an increase in rainfall. Amazing but true.

  4. I am told that there is no word for "thank you" in Hindi. I assume it is true. Anyway, I feel embarrassed when my Indian friends call out "check" in a restaurant or "hotel" in a taxi with no please or thank you. I just have to get over it.

  5. It isn't wine it is coloured olive oil. Turns to wax below about 5 degrees C. So as spring arrives in Italy and Greece the Madonnas start to weep and the Christs start to drip blood. And the priests put out the collection trays.

  6. There are a lot of jobs where the environment is hot and you have to keep hydrated. I know in mining many Muslims ignore the Ramadam rules, because they would get ill if they didn't and create an OHS headache for the employer. So it is easier to run a mine here than in the northern hemisphere!

I remember getting Ninepence pocket money though, 6d from Dad and 3d from Nan and Grandad. . . and 2 shillings a week for my paper round in the evenings !

Ey up Lad,. . . yer tell that T' Kids of today an' they wouldn't believe ya. . . Luxury !

A bit of googling shows the Air Ace was 1/- and later 1/6 but was probably dearer here in Oz back then.

  8. I think some parts of the Union Jack will have to be removed in that event, but I forget which parts represent which.

    Edit -

The flag combines aspects of three older national flags: the red cross of St George of the Kingdom of England, the white saltire of St Andrew for Scotland (which two were united in the first Union Flag), and the red saltire of St Patrick to represent Ireland.

    Thanks Wikipedia
