Somewhere in my library I have a book about ancient glass lenses. The Egyptians had telescopes and theodolites of a sort, very convincing analysis. I must find it and read it again.

Turbs, I am fascinated by the rise of ancient civilisations and cultures but have ben too lazy to research them as you have done. Where should I start reading? Bear in mind that I am not a young bloke and need to make the best use of the time available!

I understand that every meeting of the Bangkok Sudanese Society is a black Thai affair.

Herbert Hoover, probably the smartest President ever, arrived at the wrong moment in history too.

I saw a chickpea once, at a rock festival.

Well that disposes of the nuclear winter theory. The bloody things are harmless!

Latest research is also showing that rain follows the plough, as they said in South Australia. Minute organic particles causing an increase in rainfall. Amazing but true.

Nonsense. If you think we can't sustain 100 million then you haven't travelled in Australia or Asia.

Thanks Phil, will be following with concern about Turkish friends.

I am told that there is no word for "thank you" in Hindi. I assume it is true. Anyway, I feel embarrassed when my Indian friends call out "check" in a restaurant or "hotel" in a taxi with no please or thank you. I just have to get over it.

It isn't wine it is coloured olive oil. Turns to wax below about 5 degrees C. So as spring arrives in Italy and Greece the Madonnas start to weep and the Christs start to drip blood. And the priests put out the collection trays.

Mum used to say "shop now before the day goes".
Political correctness hadn't been invented then.

My daughter and husband lived on a Dutch barge moored at Limehouse for several years. Was ok when the first child arrived but not the second. Barge is still for sale if anyone is interested!

There are a lot of jobs where the environment is hot and you have to keep hydrated. I know in mining many Muslims ignore the Ramadam rules, because they would get ill if they didn't and create an OHS headache for the employer. So it is easier to run a mine here than in the northern hemisphere!

I expect to wake up with an election tomorrow. I don't intend to waste it.

Phil you have just identified RF addiction as a new disease that I think requires medical research funding. I need a withdrawal programme. Maybe I should start reading those 2/6d war flying comics again.

I think some parts of the Union Jack will have to be removed in that event, but I forget which parts represent which.
Edit -
The flag combines aspects of three older national flags: the red cross of St George of the Kingdom of England, the white saltire of St Andrew for Scotland (which two were united in the first Union Flag), and the red saltire of St Patrick to represent Ireland.

It needs a mod to turn the image around. Otherwise the hunters will get into the habit of leading the target at the back end, at least half the time.
