Malcolm Turnbull is a multimillionaire so in your view he's a great guy and must be very clever. Astonishing! He is a SELF MADE millionaire which is a hell of a lot better than a millionaire who got their money on a silver plater. Of course self maid millionaires are clever, otherwise then wouldn't have made that much money. I'm never said he was great, I don't personally know him. He may well be an ass hole. I am not a labor supporter at all. But I am a supporter of any party that take the interest of the people that elect them seriously and do not do the bidding of the wealthy powerful elites. If the Nats were serious about helping rural communities and the average punter they might even get my vote. I vote for whoever is actually about caring for the humans rather than corporations. The NBN was doomed the moment it started. It was always going to be behind time, over-budget and eventually to probably be superseded by other technology but we'll be stuck with it. It's like most giant infra-structure projects - controlled by large numbers of divergent self-interest groups and modified a bit by each successive group who get a foothold. The politicians ( including whoever was in charge when labour started it ) are always trying to please too many noisy self interested people. But while it is running at the forefront ( which probably won't be long) it has already been researched to suggest we will have paid a couple of hundred billion for almost universally high speed porn and you tube videos. The claimed major uses that have been the justifiers for it can actually do what they need to do with lower speeds and less bandwidth. Even now youtube and porn counts for most australian bandwidth. Just one example. They want solar on all social housing ( hopefully the rock proof kind of glass because where I live virtually anything made of glass within 2 km of the social housing area is broken) and they want 50 % of it produced in Australia (admirable but not at all realistic) ... Why would we set up a short term solar manufacturing industry at high cost with high wages only to close it back down again , when China produces high quality low xost solar....we would be better off spending that money on china solar panels and with the money we save, we spend on creating jobs in an area we we actually have a long term sustainable competitive advantage....eg solar research or solar engineering, not manufacturing...stupid stupid stupid Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You remember the GFC- it was caused by merchant bankers and their engineering of financial markets. The modern snake oil salesmen. Oh and don't forget the One Tel debacle that cost people billions and Malcom made a handy profit from the whole thing. Some expensive lawyers and smoke and mirrors meant he did not get a jail sentence. Or the Gordon Gretch affair. Yep about as trustworthy as a pedophile running a kindergarten. The NBN was all about equity of access. The old copper and caox systems are aging rapidly and need tobe replaced to sutain the sorts of speeds now being demanded. It appeared that Telstra, sick and tired of being screwed over as the only carrier obliged to provide infrastructure was unlikely to stump up the cash to upgrade the service to support the new speeds if bit players like optus were to come in and pay pay pitiful low ACCC mandated charges on the infrastructure that Telstra paid for. This maent that on thin routes such as country towns. villages and hamlets were never going to get adequate services unless they were propped up with government money - hence NBN. In a lot of areas the copper is failing. When it was just phones one could get inventive to re-use the capacity but eventually it has to be replaced and the obvious solution is fibre to the home and you need to do it street by street, not just house by house (and fix up the pipes, ducts and pits as you go). As with anything - like a new ship, an aircraft or a road you can't use it till it is complete. The NBN, like a fleet of ships or aircraft, gets rolled out a bit at a time but the upfront costs are huge, particularly for a complete new highly novel, properly engineered and complicated design - the NBN also needs the support infrastructure in place well before the last customer is hooked up. Guest Andys@coffs Posted September 16, 2015 Share Posted September 16, 2015 He's not talking about suburb based infrastructure, but rather the multi DataCenter core switching Infrastructure and overarching management and control infrastructure which, as you know, isn't a couple of DLink SOHO Boxes but rather something of capacity to scale to whole of Australia size....when there is only a few suburbs rolled out, as now, then I suspect that the core infrastructure as a percentage of their total cost structure is much higher per node than it will be towards the end..... I also suspect the significant blow outs in cost are likely a function of falling AUD to USD FX conversion rates......The reality is that high tech whether sold in AUD or not is all tied back to USD........Of course you can hedge at the time you decide to go ahead, but you don't get nothing for nothing and the costs when talking $B will be significant so I wouldn't be surprised if we were simply exposed to market movements...... LAST MEANS LAST but like all construction projects there is a lot you need to do BEFORE you put the front door on, part of which is the rest of the community and the road to the outside world not just to the next village.
