1. Those born in the Forties are even better!
2. Yeah I know OME, I was actually poking fun at myself. Y'see I'd always said staunchly that I didn't have anything to do with social media. I'm not on facebook, I have no idea how to sent a tweet and I don't any of the other stuff. Then my digitally literate Son shot me down when he said "hey! you chat on the Rec Flying site, the Yahoo groups Sonex and Jabiru pages so you're heavily into social media" Boy was I traumatised. I'm not getting counselling but it was a close thing.....
3. Me too. Maybe we could start up a website where like minded luddites could chat? Oh, wait minute..........
4. Happy Gnu year to you too Gnarly. May it bring you peace and contentment but above all tolerance of those who may not share all of your views.
5. But Chris, You know what Pajero means in spanish slang don' t you? :whisper:Not sayin' you are one, but...... I wouldn't want to be labeled one because of my car choice......
6. Had a VW for 9 years since new - 160,000km. Parts replaced so far: Tyres; brake pads & discs and one O2 sensor. Pretty happy with both the price of parts and the infrequent need to buy them.
7. One of the funniest men on the planet. The quote from the bucket list film is: "As you get older, Never pass up a bathroom, never waste a hard-on, and never trust a fart" Sorry Moderators
8. Could almost describe me, But I don't remember saying that! Unless of course you're being very clever and describing my namesake from "Lord of the Rings" ??
9. Is it from the film The bucket list" ? Was it Jack Nicholson's character or Morgan Freeman's? Or am I way off track as usual? I know one of my very "relaxed" colleagues said it to me at a work do one night. he looked quite distressed.
10. Near enough Red, Groucho is the guy most people think originated the quote but that title belongs to Sir Ernest John Pickstone Benn, 2nd Baronet (1875-1954), Uncle to Anthony Wedgewood Benn. I reckon the quote still stands up today. Next!?
11. Sorry rgmwa. Not Sam Clemens. This guy was the uncle of a famous English politician who was chairman of the Labour party under Harold Wilson in the '70s The famous American who is most often quoted as having said that, also said "Please accept my resignation. I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member" But he stole or borrowed the "politics" quote from the English Baronet
12. Nope. Sorry. Usually attributed (wrongly) to an American comedian but actually came from an English Baronet.
13. Try this one, probably as relevant today as it was in 1930: "Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedy." Hint: It is reportedly NOT the CASA mission statement.
14. Frank, I agree with all you say in post 235, but to clarify something, a good behaviour bond is not a fine but a promise to the court that the person bonded will be of good behaviour for the period specified. If the person bound over commits a criminal offence while the bond is still in force then they, or their guarantor(s) are liable to forfeit the sum. Most judicial systems have a vetting or qualifying system for those going surety to make sure they have sufficient asset backing to meet the forfeit. There is also often a prison sentence imposed but suspended for the period of the bond. It works sometimes and for some people but not usually in the case of addicts. The biggest problem, as I saw it, was that the courts often wimp out and do not seek payment of the forfeit and/or do not impose the suspended sentence. Defence counsel often tell some shockers to play on the leniency of the courts. Not lies mind you, but often nowhere near the whole truth. And so the cycle continues........ Sorry for rambling.
15. Where did THAT come from?
16. The Gnu said: "Not that there is anything wrong with this principle, it is actually fair if you think about it." There most certainly is! It's not and I have! "You are either confused on this point or are a God-hater who just wanted to try and throw in another smear." I'm neither. Enough with the name calling! I choose not to confuse or besmirch my faith by soiling it with the label religion. Religion is the last refuge of human savagery and violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. Gnu, I've coloured my responses to your post just to give you an inkling that not everything is black or white!
17. What?! You expect consistency and objective reporting from the commercial media? Where's the profit margin in that? Next you'll be expecting ethical reporting. C'mon Red, get with it!
18. An eye for an eye eh? No wonder the Isil scum finds it so easy to recruit in Australia. We are already adopting their creed
19. Restating my position Bex, in case you missed it: "And finally, I firmly believe that there are some offenders who should be locked away for the protection of the community and shouldn't be released until they are incapable of causing harm to the community. But I do not support the death penalty." Travers, the 3 Murphy Brothers and Murdoch were jailed for life with the judge having their files marked "Never to be released". The attempt by two of the murphy's to have their sentences re-considered in 2006 failed and the NSW government introduced legislation designed to prevent the state's worst criminals - including the killers of Anita Cobby and Janine Balding - from ever qualifying for release. Bex, I have dealt with murderers, rapists, child killers, and paedophiles, drug dealers, drug users, and the whole spectrum of criminals, and the criminally insane on a day to day basis for the last 15 years. I do not side with these people, I do not in any way defend their actions. Oh how I wish I was detached from the reality of it all! I do not support the death penalty.
20. Well for starters if he's imprisoned there's a very strong likelyhood that there's there's a big wall and lots of razor wire 'tween him and me. But to respond seriously to your post Robin, my view is: What's the use of having laws and moral codes if we don't try and rehabilitate and re-educate those who break the laws and breach the codes. If, as a society we seek, retribution, revenge or vengeance over justice, then we are not that far removed from those we seek to wreak our vengeance upon. justice noun 1 [ mass noun ] just behaviour or treatment: a concern for justice, peace, and genuine respect for people. • the quality of being fair and reasonable. • the administration of the law or authority in maintaining this. "Justice is conscience, not a personal conscience but the conscience of the whole of humanity" [Alexander Solzhenitsyn Letter to three students] "For me, justice is the first condition of humanity" [Wole Soyinka The Man Died] And finally, I firmly believe that there are some offenders who should be locked away for the protection of the community and shouldn't be released until they are incapable of causing harm to the community. But I do not support the death penalty. One more rant ended.
