  1. As there are SPACES in the file name it is not that easy. Found this: http://superuser.com/questions/475874/how-does-the-windows-rename-command-interpret-wildcards sourceMask The sourceMask works as a filter to determine which files are renamed. The wildcards work here the same as with any other command that filters file names. ? - Matches any 0 or 1 character except . This wildcard is greedy - it always consumes the next character if it is not a . However it will match nothing without failure if at name end or if the next character is a . * - Matches any 0 or more characters including . (with one exception below). This wildcard is not greedy. It will match as little or as much as is needed to enable subsequent characters to match. All non-wildcard characters must match themselves, with a few special case exceptions. . - Matches itself or it can match the end of name (nothing) if no more characters remain. (Note - a valid Windows name cannot end with .) {space} - Matches itself or it can match the end of name (nothing) if no more characters remain. (Note - a valid Windows name cannot end with {space}) *. at the end - Matches any 0 or more characters except . The terminating . can actually be any combination of . and {space} as long as the very last character in the mask is . This is the one and only exception where * does not simply match any set of characters. The above rules are not that complex. But there is one more very important rule that makes the situation confusing: The sourceMask is compared against both the long name and the short 8.3 name (if it exists). This last rule can make interpretation of the results very tricky, because it is not always obvious when the mask is matching via the short name. It is possible to use RegEdit to disable the generation of short 8.3 names on NTFS volumes, at which point interpretation of file mask results is much more straight forward. Any short names that were generated before disabling short names will remain. Ok, so I try: ren QI{space}-{space}*.* *.* Doesn't work. D:\WinFast WorkArea\QI>dir Volume in drive D is MOVIES 0 Volume Serial Number is D433-F280 Directory of D:\WinFast WorkArea\QI 06-Oct-13 08:33 <DIR> . 06-Oct-13 08:33 <DIR> .. 05-Oct-13 21:19 <DIR> Converted 18-Sep-13 21:28 1,378,058,240 QI - Hypnosis.mpg 27-Sep-13 22:19 1,388,345,344 QI - Imbroglio.mpg 14-Sep-13 19:48 1,364,582,400 QI - International.mpg 06-Oct-13 08:32 1,382,608,896 QI - Invertebrates.mpg 4 File(s) 5,513,594,880 bytes 3 Dir(s) 237,635,506,176 bytes free D:\WinFast WorkArea\QI>ren QI{space}-{space}*.* *.* The system cannot find the file specified. Ah, ya gotta love windoze.
  2. Hongie, I have a handful of re-namer programs. Thanks, but I was just wanting to make a simple rename .bat file to do it. This is one example. I record a lot of shows and they all have an initial prefix until they are processed. After that, the prefix doesn't need to be there. Loading these programs and setting them up to "find/replace" things in each directory is painful. No worries. I'll just use what I have and put up with windoze's in-ability to rename from the "CLI".
  3. Yeah, it doesn't really help with this example. As I explained: I thought I would enter rename (or ren) "QI -"*.* *.* and nothing happens. Probably a problem with the spaces. There is MORE THAN ONE file I want to rename. So I have (for example): QI - episode1 QI - episode2 QI - episode3 QI - episode4 and so on. I just want them all to be: episode1 episode2 episode3 episode4 and so on.
  4. Rename. Yes Kyle I am wanting to do it from the "CMD" (or Dos) prompt. I have 'n' files all prefixed with "QI - " and want to remove that in one easy "swoop". Clicking on each file and manually doing it is slow and not as easy. So I am wanting to do it easily/quickly. fly_tornado Sorry?
  5. Folks, Sorry, but my resources are somewhat "limited". I record QI episodes and when they are recorded, they are prefixed with "QI - " so I know what is what. After I get time to "sort" them (or should that be collate?) the "QI- " becomes pointless. I thought I could: ren "QI - "*.* *.* but it doesn't work. I am NOT a windoze person. Sure there are programs out there to do things like that and I have them, but for things like that, it seems over the top. Can a guru help me in the syntax of how to get the command to work? I have tried with and without the " " around the QI part, but all to no avail. Thanks in advance.
  6. Ok, here goes. I have had a rant a while ago about spelling. Cost Most Post Coast Toast Roast Choose Chose Loose Lose Then there are these people who interchange your and you're. Some things people posting here should look at/into: QI - a show on the ABC. It goes into some interesting things. "When did we think the world was flat" "Spelling mistakes" "The grocers apostrophe." As bad a speller as I am, I think it is a rich language and though it has it's quirks, it is a growing language. Thinking of: Steven Fry - Planet word. Interesting series. I am having problems just now with: current currant effect affect but I sort of know some of it. muscle mussel and some other weird things. Anyway, enough from me.
  7. I dispise them, but was wondering if I (an "outsider") can search for people who have an account in either of these systems?
  8. Ya lost me. But problem resolved and things working.
  9. Woo Hoo! Update! Problem resolved. Am happy.
  10. Thanks, but at the end I get "Network or SIM card error. So I am kinda stuck. But thanks for the heads up on the password. Stupidly I didn't see the "Change password" but I think I tried the default and it didn't work with same error.
  11. Folks, I am wanting to set up call barring. I go into settings, calls, call barring, all outgoing calls. It wants a password/pin. I never set it and the phone has been factory reset - a while ago - and I have never set one as far as I know.
  12. Thanks Phil. Alas that whole plan has kinda fallen through. It isn't happening anymore. :(
  13. Well, the idea has kinda died in the a$$. Too much "bugs bunny" it seems. :(
  14. So shouldn't you not allow them to hold your site to "ransom" and have links, but if they don't respond soon enough, they are skipped? Just asking.
  15. Now it is even happening here. When I re-load a page I am "waiting, waiting, waiting" The little message bottom left of the screen: waiting: connect.facebook.net This is happening on a lot of pages I go to and it seems to "stall" the page loading. I'm using FF (not the latest version) and am NOT in/on/interested in facebook.
  16. rdarby, Yes.... kinda. Alas some of these people "pidgeon hole you" to fit their expectations so they can tell you what they want to tell you. They don't really understand or know the REAL problem - though it is argued that I am not telling them. Gee, if I *KNEW* I would be able to deal with it. But because I don't know/understand and am unable to put it in words it is beyond impossible to explain it. What is going on inside, in my mind, where ever, makes some horror movies I have seen look tame.
  17. Yes Turbo, I know. Alas as hard as I am trying, it isn't working. Also "time" is not happening as it should. What some people say should take a second is taking me a lot longer. So although I am "steping back for a different perspective" the act of moving the legs and that happening is not happening as quickly as I would maybe like/want. Subsequently I am suffering in the mean time. Alot of my "plan B"s are - as mentioned - drastic! And if applied there is little/no chance of going back. I don't think that they are the best solution at this point.
  18. Thanks Nev. That's cute. Anyway, I am at work now - tuesday - and had better start shoveling some before any more gets thrown my way.
  19. Looking at someone else who is "worse than me" holds little constellation for me. There will always be people better and worse. So comparing myself to someone worse doesn't really make me feel any better. I am also concerned that the "light at the end of the tunnel" is actually the train heading straight for me. I am old enough also to know bad things happen. Alas looking at it: It is more bad than good. Sure the good times are good, but gee the bad times are just as bad. I also know that when you are in $hit upto your neck, KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! Alas that also makes it difficult to call for help.
  20. Nev, LIFE{ } doesn't wait while I am needing rest. I am at the coal face and have no support. As I see it I really don't have many options. Either I "dig" or I "die". There is no support team, there are no back stops. I have just made a couple of life changing decisions and am waiting to see what happens. I am thinking "Prepare for the worst, hope for the best." but hoping isn't helping the situation where I need to sort of prepare for the worst. Fingers on the transponder ready to set 7700.
  21. Yes Nev, but sometimes the collateral damage should be avoided. I have enough scares to not really want any new ones simply for the sake of "what the hell...." I don't have enough energy to keep putting up with this sort of stuff. Now and then letting the rope slip is ok, but..... Am I at the end of the rope?
  22. It is hard to ask a question to which you don't understand. I don't understand what is happening, I don't understand why it is happening - mostly - and I don't understand how to deal with it. I COULD do some things but they are EXTREME and would be equivilant to burning my bridges. I don't think that is a good idea at this point. I guess that is a problem of living a "black and white" type of life, when really there is so much colour. It is hard to adapt things which work in black and white to work in colour. I think I know what a piniata feels like.
  23. rdarby, Alas LIFE{ } doesn't come with the guarantee that "ATC" will always be there. (Who knows: This may be my "mid life crisis" - oh what a thought!) Maybe I should become a brick factory. I am making enough of them just now.
