It would be appropriate to assess this rent figure, adjusted for expenses eg. rates, maintenance etc as part of a person's income. It is a mistake to assess wealth on the basis of the value of the house you occupy. I was able to buy a good block of land when young and then build my house on it. Don I'm a bit unsure of this one....someone who works hard and forgoes luxury earlier in life, to set themselves up, can be penalised compared to those who spent all their money living it up, then want to be supported by the taxpayer. There's been a hell of a lot of damage caused by world leaders carving up continents without regard to tribal areas etc, but you can't unscramble the egg. It was probably a mistake to compare the first fleet to the current situation, back then the Aborigines faced a better armed and technologically superior force. The modern equivalent would be if the USA decided to invade us. I don't believe that generational guilt is a good thing either, I don't feel guilty personally about what was done 200 years ago, any more than a modern German should feel guilty about Hitler. What about people that inherit money and use various tax loop holes to avoid paying tax and now qualify for a pension? They worked hard, they deserve a pension, its just not fair is it? Aviation is a burgeoning industry here and having fluent English is an advantage. But... there are many hoops to jump through. It's not an easy process. PM me if you want details. FT is exaggerating just a little about working conditions here. True - wages are lower than in OZ but there are many benefits offered by employers. Private health and dental cover (usually for the entire family), life insurance, meal allowances, fuel cost reimbursement and more. And of course, paid holidays! Food is good and cheap. A kilogram of high quality coffee costs the equivalent of AUD $20. I bought 1200 gm of good cheese for AUD $10 this morning. Seriously, if you can't live on BR$50 a day, you're doing it wrong! I worked in remote Aboriginal communities for my last 12 years in Oz and I have seen and heard more than my fair share of racism and bigotry. Enough to last a lifetime and all indications are, this is getting worse - not better! A racist remark here will land you in jail and Brazilian jails have a deserved reputation. I voted with my feet.
