  1. If it is anything like the ones that I have used, each emailed link has a unique number (usually called a token?) that can be used to track whether the participant has completed the survey. Then the software automatically sends reminders to the anonymous participants before the deadline. True anonymity is a bit of a farce, at the very least your IP address is available to the software, and I presume a good IT guru could crack the database to find the list of which tokens have been claimed etc.

If being made redundant, you especially have nothing to lose in telling them how you really feel!

  2. I can't understand why a match can turn normally rational people into primitives with nothing but tribal instincts to rubbish the obvious talent of players from ( Victoria, or put your state HERE)

Interestingly, when I first moved to Melbourne and fronted up for a job interview, the second question I was asked was which (AFL) team I barracked for. I blustered my way through by explaining that I came from Queensland and didn't really understand AFL so didn't follow a team. Apparently that was an acceptable answer, but if I had said Collingwood, I would have been unlikely to get the job!

  3. I must have missed the comment about not being in this forum Don, although a couple suggested that offtopic would be better than humour.

Please dont think that I suggested that people shouldn't express their opinions. But I was starting to see some people for whom I have a lot of respect for (at least from theur posts as they are strangers in real life) who seemed to be heading towards open brawling. Hence the agree to disagree bit. Cheers, Shane

  4. But do you spend your days attempting to convert those who are determined to not be converted? Or spend your time where you might make a difference. When it comes to politics, a steadfast belief in one side or the either is hardly likely to improve the prospect for hummanity.

  5. The moderators will decide what appears on the forum and in general they do an outstanding job. The attitude that we should not voice independent views on politics sounds like small town prejudice to me. Freedom of speech is the most valuable commodity and we should freely exercise it. Regards, Don

I haven't seen anyone say that the mods don't do a great job; nor that this thread shouldn't be here. Not even that people shouldn't express their views. But after awhile, surely it gets a bit pointless to try to convert those who are just as ardent supporters for something that is opposite to what you believe in.

  6. It is disappointing to see so many red-raggers on this forum.

People should agree to disagree sometimes, and just respect the fact that others may hold wildly different ideals, and that their personal reasons to hold those ideals can be just as valid for them as for anyone else.

I think most people come here to talk and read about flying, and in that regard, I don't care what their political affiliations are. It isn't www.conservativerecreationalflying.com any more than it is the www.socialistrecreationalflying.com forum.

  7. So it starts with a harmless (but perhaps politically incorrect) joke based in the UK. Quickly progressed to immigration, policy, politics, and even a little history, followed by a little sledging, more "think of the children", through to what is really wrong with this country. Then came firearms, self-defence, and a bit more ethnic debate. Of everything that has been said, this is probably the most informed statement of the thread:

On the bright side, Jabiru is being left alone!!!

I'd count that as a win for Jabiru on an aviation forum!

  8. Why is this in the 'Aviation Laughter' section? It should be in the 'Off Topic' section.

Nothing to do with aviation, and nothing to do with laughter.

    Pud

Originally meant as a joke and not to cause intense and serious debate Pud - just ended up that way. Perhaps time the mods moved the relevant debate to off topic?

  9. I don't know if there is a way of keeping work out of it. What it amounts to is workplace bullying, which the employer has an obligation to deal with. If your employer allows it to continue, your employer becomes liable so even complaints to outside bodies would probably come back to them anyway.

  10. I've been a member of many types of forums over the years, and seen many end up in nasty brawls. This is the latest that I have seen:

    Members,

Due to a recent legal issue involving a dealer and myself, this forum is from this point forward, shut down. Due to the settlement costs, the pressure of the legal dispute, the falling quality of members and members’ ongoing disregard for the rules and regulations of this forum, my hand has been forced.

I will not lie, the legal dispute put a very large amount of pressure on myself and my family. The issue that the dealer took issue with is a member here posting a thread in which he opined that they may have been selling fake optics. Another member insinuated that the dealer knew exactly what was being sold. The issue was then resolved by the distributor, and I was sued for defamation.

The case has since been settled out of court, leaving me out of pocket a significant sum of money for a uni student working part time.

Shooting.com.au was a great forum for the amount of information it held, and was a fantastic resource for anyone interested in shooting. I don't pretend to know anything about the legal situation of recflying and the extent to which recflying might be open to legal challenge, but this is a really good example of why it is important to watch what you say online, for the sake of others if not for yourself.

  11. Here is my very uninformed opinion - Labour is heading for a landslide defeat regardless of who is in charge. If Rudd had challenged and won yesterday, then lost at the next election, then he would have been blamed. People have very short memories. I think Rudd will wait until Gillard loses the election and is forced to resign, and then he is free to hold up his hand as a candidate, having not challenged again (as he promised he would not). Rudd is young enough to handle several more years in opposition and certainly has some popularity still. Let's face it, who does the Labour party have to field after they lose?

Personal opinion again only, but it seems like it just gets worse with every new PM, regardless of ilk. Anyone know what life is like in NZ? Might be time to move out.....

  12. I heard of ads that appear for maybe 100th of a second. You read it without knowing it. It could say "buy Rotax" and the next thing you know you are standing glazy eyed next to your plane with a new Rotax in it.

Yep plenty of research to support the fact that flashing a message faster than the brain can consciously register can influence what you may think next. I don't know how successful it has been in commercial enterprises, but certainly from a psychological perspective, you can be primed by information that you don't consciously recall having seen. Discreet brand placement in media is probably the best example of it's use but that is normally more than long enough to register, but discreet enought hat you don't really notice unless you look for it.
