  1. The politicians won or lost the election, not the polls. Blame who you like for labours defeat, the matter is that they lost the unloosable election. Incompetence comes into play there somewhere. The people of Australia arent stupid, they elect the government, not polsters or self opinionated commentators.

  2. He was the greatest PM will ever had and with Keating they were they dynamic duo that changed our country forever in many great ways.

A real life political Batman and Robin.

And he was a battler, he started from very humble very beginnings. He was never given anything on a plate. He was a giant of his times.

Yes I have met him and Blanche.

I fear his kind will never be repeated.

So how come I was paying 17% mortgage interest rates during his reign. He dumped his wife for a blonde bimbo and people think he is a god. Not in my eyes. Famous for skulling beer, screwing over bill hayden etc. Sorry he passed but not celebrating his non achievements.

  3. Indoor wood fires, volcanoes, rotting vegetation, cow farts, all contribute to atmospheris CO2 levels. . Climate change is cyclic, not a current problem. Any major drive to fix the CO2 levels would be instantly undone by bush fires and volcanoes. First it was the ozone layer, p[roven not a problem, then methane from cows, now climate change that funnily enough involves money and investment into carbon credits etc. Sound like a whole money making exercvise to me. I believe the science does not even agree with the climater change groups.

  4. Yes he was at fault, but I reckon the worse culprit is our insane puritan culture.Just imagine a hypothetical society where the kind of stuff he did was praiseworthy and the kids were not considered as victims but as normal.

This type of society possibly existed in ancient Greece and in the Royal Navy of 100 years ago. We have become more puritan in recent years and I don't know why

When I was a kid in Alice Springs, there were a few characters around town ( one an Anglican official ) who were inclined towards boys. As far as I know, nothing much ever happened.

If it did, why should the boy feel guilt and shame so much that he would commit suicide? That would be our culture doing that to them. Of cours the perp played his part, but it was only a part.

so the long term psychological damage to the victims is irrelevant? I think your thinking needs an enema.

  5. Well said, Marty. The events of the past week have shown that the current government is not fit to govern, by any reasonable definition. Bring on the election.

Unfortunately, given the state of the 2 major parties and their reliance on the ...Nationals/greens, I dont think either is fit to be the government and theren lies the peoblem because no one else has the complete policies to govern. We are up the creek without a paddle so to speak. Shades of the "banana republic"

  6. You can look at it that way, or you can look into what it takes to

    a) Form a political party

    b) Get the numbers you need to get on the ballot

    c) Form a coherent set of policies that make sense

    d) If you actually do get some seats, keep the party together

    e) Handle media without looking like an idiot

    f) Actually be able to negotiate with the other parties without compromising your own principles TOO much

    g) Do all this for 20 hours a day while still having a family life.

As an object lesson, look at Clive Palmer and Pauline Hanson. Clive bought his way in, had a bunch of members who ended up deserting him, now he's out again.

Hanson's in on pure dog-whistle politics, had a bunch of members deserting her or being found ineligible, now she's down to... 2 is it? Plus deserting her own principles by supporting the big business tax cuts.

The problem with both of these people is they failed c), d), e) and f) above. The lack of logical policies meant that whoever they manage to attract to run on their ticket will either be as scatterbrained as they themselves are, or purely opportunistic, which means they'll either be proven totally useless or will jump ship at the earliest opportunity.

Both Labor and LNP are a group of people with widely different stances on a range of subjects. The right wing of Labor is more similar to LNP in lots of ways, while the progressive members of the LNP are more similar to Labor. The left wing of Labor is more similar to the Greens and the right wing of the LNP are more like Corey Bernardi's "conservatives" than anyone else.

The best we can hope for is to get somewhere in the middle. My personal preference is slightly left of centre, socially progressive and with a large focus on the environment. Other people will prefer right of centre and more conservative. But as long as we're in the middle somewhere and avoid the extremes to the edges, the country will be all right.

so there realy is a santa claus?

  7. It's LABOR (sp). in Australia.. Some say there's NO difference between LNP and Labor but there IS really. A lot of wedging goes on where they prompt Labor to be different and then to jump on them as a great risk to the whole thing with a bit of creative misrepresentation. and hype.. Nev

    eh...potato...potahto

  8. RobinsmSee post 24

I certainly did Not vote for M Turnbul

    spacesailor

Didn't say you did, just that someone did and we are getting what they voted for. That being said, not sure who to vote for, opportunistic me too labour, brain dead greens, immoral Nats or greedy libs....not much choice really..

  9. Did you actually read my post?

Yep, read it, disagree. Why should my money, and that of every other working Oz person go to do something that the governments of those countries should be doing. I reiterate, the money is not going to the people, its going to the politicians. I repeat, if you are going to give our money away, at least get a return from it and help the people, not the political ideology, the religious money people etc. Sorry mate, but our people come first, our health and welfare come first. Read Nomad petes answer. Properly targeted is correct, but who decides that. Surely the government of the country the money is going to and who controls the feeding trough for these people...???

  10. Robinson said"Sorry to disagree, but my taxes are paid to support me and mine, not some corrupt overseas: "govt that pockets the profits and says "stuff the people."

    That's smacks of Australia's government.

good, then they are getting something right, maybe a first for them...

  11. I you're criticising the level of overseas aid provided by the Australian government, I agree it's wrong. It not nearly enough.Australia, although a very rich country, has one of the stingiest aid budgets in the developed world, and governments routinely make big cuts to it.

Properly targeted, aid money can help us at least as much as the recipient country. Australia helped Indonesia control Foot and Mouth disease, which makes our billion-dollar cattle industry a lot safer.

When Howard and Bush reduced aid to public education in Indonesia, Saudi money poured in to fund madrassas that push their ultra- orthodox brand of Islam. The results may well be hundreds of thousands of potential Bali Bombers...

Sorry to disagree, but my taxes are paid to support me and mine, not some corrupt overseas govt that pockets the profits and says "stuff the people." Forget the money, how about investing in industry and works that make a return to the investor, put money into the pockets of the people that actually need it and give the ordinary people some pride and leadership to start and manage their own affairs. Unfortunately I beleive that a return for the investment is need to repay it, after all, I, and others, worked for that money, we deserve to get a benefit, and not just a feel good, from it. Tree hugging is all very well but giving overseas govt\s money to fatten the beaurocrats doesnt cut it for me.

  12. The americanisation of our country. People dont matter any more, its all about the penny pinchers and how our leaders appear on the world stage. What is the popint of having a budget in surplus when the populace are starving or suffering. I thought the government was elected to care for the peoiplke of the country as well as looking after the housekeeping, not sending money overseas to make us look good. Charity begins at home.

  13. Disagree totally. Politicians have nothing to do with morals, and a person's own private life has nothing to with their ability to do the job. Barney can root as many aides as he likes, and as long as it's consensual and they derive no financial benefit from it, I don't give a rat's ass. It wasn't the blowjob that killed Bill Clinton, it was the lie about it. I don't care that Barmy was tupping his media advisor, but if it turns out that she got other positions that weren't properly advertised or selected because of his influence - well that's a breach of ministerial standards and his head should roll.

I don't know of any male world leader whose private life would stand the kind of moral scrutiny you're talking about. Even the great JFK was a total pussy-hound, and he was a thousand times the statesman that either the US or we have today.

    Obviously you have your opinion.

  14. Nope, disagree. These pollies should be setting the moral tone for the country. They, because of their position, should be seen to be a cut above the average bed jumping prole. If they cant keep it in their pants, or behind their skirts then how can we trust that they will do the right thing by us in their governance of the country. I am one of the few that believe you act as you believe and obviously these dickless wonders believe that everything is for screwing so where does that leave us. If they want to screw around do it when they are not in a responsible leadership roll that people are meant to respect and look up to.....

  15. I switched to bendigo bank telco and have had no problems with speed, phone or anything else. Just sayin

This mob have now sold their business to a local provider. Be interesting to see if the quality is maintained... Not happy.

  16. Neil, you begin "with respect" but provide none. You need to read my post and think. I protested about the governments stupidity. Soldiers were just doing their job. The Vietnamese were just trying to reclaim their country after being exploited by the French & then the Yanks for more than a century. A family friend was in 161 battery at the battle of Long Tan. I was 16 at the time & could not understand why we were there. I won the lottery in 69 & did 3 years in the Territorials which I really enjoyed. NZ only ever sent volunteer regulars to Vietnam. I knew a number of them & wished them well. They knew I opposed our involvement but they were professionals doing their job & their duty.

How the groundswell of opposition to the war turned into hatred of our own troops was extremely distressing for me. I find it quite amazing now that many of those who served and survived deeply scarred from their time there have now found forgiveness and friendship with their former enemy.

On my overland journey back to NZ from the UK in 1975 I went to Vientienne in Laos crossing the Mekong from Nong Khai & was trapped there when the Pathet Lao took over. The border was closed so I took advantage of a return flight to Hanoi for US$25.00. The City was incredibly battle scarred after so much bombing from B52s & the people were busy rebuilding but so friendly and generous with the little they had it was one of the most humbling experiences of my life.

Sorry KG, NZ did have conscription. I was selected for mil service in 1969 by ballot. All 19 year olds in NZ at the time had to register with the Dept of labour to go into the ballot for service. Might pay to check your facts. I still have my military registration card from that time. EDIT>> KG was partially correct on reflection butIt was made very clear to me that I would "volunteer to serve in vietnam" when I as conscripted. I know what the policy was but the actual was somewhat different.

  17. Why should Jollife have to apologise. No One apologies for jokes about Jews, Politicians, Catholics, Irishmen etc, so why in this case? I thought they were funny and still do. Doesn't make me feel less about the aboriginals. Political correctness is offensive...I am offended by it...lol
