  1. I hear today that 119 people in Australia die of cardio vascular disease. Corona virus doesn't compare.

Anything that shortens your life is to be resisted, just because there are things that have been out there killing us for a long time that we need to fight does not excuse us from trying to fight a new killer

Its easy to look at the numbers of deaths so far and think its relatively low level stuff (perhaps even easier if you live in a sparsely populated and little affected country) but this is just the beginning, Winter in Europe is going to be a shit-fest

  2. I don't think the businesses are benefitting directly.. The business reeives the 80% to the mav value of 2500/month and have to pay that amount to their employees.. I don't think they get to keep any of it. I could be wrong.. It helps keep the employees on the payroll so that they don't lose their job abd it pays them more than the basic unioversal credit, which is something like £400/month.. I could be wrong, though and the government website doesn't provide the details in a nice consumable format (or at least in the way my brain takes it).

The business gets to keep its staff on the books, many of which would out of need tried to find alternative jobs, they don't have to re train new staff when things come back online, this is not an insignificant factor for any business and its taxpayers money, I wonder how many business owners with multiple millions in the bank even consider topping up the wages from their own profit margins, its a definate that they wouldn't have kept the people on if it was entirely out of their pockets, so once again its public support for a private business

  3. There are many multi millionaire business owners in the UK who have furloughed their staff and the government is paying them 80% of their wages whilst off work

I'm glad the workers are being supported, but its another example of private businesses benefitting from public handouts, I understand why this is a good thing to do, but it should require some payback from the private companies, otherwise its just another example of privatising profit and nationalising debt

  4. Interesting huh how fines are flat rate and not related to your means. As space says, this means the punishment is far worse if you are poor.

I'm gunna ask my MP why this is. Bet he doesn't reply.

Its the same for Taxes, the reason? keeps the money with those that have it.

In the UK Rural Landowners get paid for having Land and doing nothing with it..seriously the more land they have the more they get paid from the public purse just to leave it as a field and do nothing

It's socialism in reverse the poor subsidise the rich, it's always been this way.

  5. Americans believe a meritocracy enables social mobility the problem being they don't actually have a meritocracy they have just been brainwashed into thinking they do, those with the best start get ahead and it continues through the generations, Trump is a great example he was born with a silver spoon up his arseand I believe that someone sat down and worked out that if he had put the original fortune given to him by his parents into a high interest account he would be worth more now than he is through his so called business success, he is a failure as a human being with little merit yet he is the president of the USA

  6. There are good People in the States, I've enjoyed my time there but its a broken society now.

Back to Covid. I'm a bit depressed tbh ........here in the UK the traffic is increasing daily and more and more people are ignoring what was a rather weak lockdown anyway.

No police evident in my area for the last month and I get the feeling that people have become blase about it and those who havn't had a personal experience think it was all a storm in a tea cup ...its not we haven't even seen the worst of it yet.

It feels like summer in the UK now...............but there are very Dark Days ahead

  7. " While fooling around, badly tore my calf muscle. So out of it for a while and partner will have to wait on me hand and foot.. Silver lining, I guess! "

Welcome to my world !. LoL

  9. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there is anything good about Covid-19, but there is a lot of hysteria. Headlines today at 2.30 Virus toll in Vic now 3 dead. That's bad, but less than for domestic violence, less than common flu, less than gun violence in the street, far less than the road toll. Let us take precautions, but get a bit of perspective.

Your perspective is about to change radically

  10. You can also put cruise liners on your list of pet hates, if the travel industry bugs you that much. But it appears your income is not reliant on the travel industry, or you would not be so harsh in your judgement.

Not a pet hate, I'm a pilot/owner and aviation enthusiast.

Cruise ships are obviously another thing needing to be shutdown

Society needs to reset, human nature means we all think we are the greatest thing since RNA came into being, we will probably end up as a short paragraph in the history of the Earth a mere blip compared even to the Dinosaurs but we can stretch our term a bit by understanding we can have a good time without being complete arseholes (I include myself in the defined realm of arseholiness)

  11. kgwilson, Could you provide a source for this?

Much garbage gets posted on the internet and then repeated as if fact

"most bat species in Wuhan were hibernating at the time, there were none available for sale at the sea food market, there is likely to be an intermediate host that has not been identified, no animal there has so far tested positive and probably only a single human was the source".

  12. Today (Monday 9th March) UK death figures by cause:

    Other : 1395

    Roads : 5

    The Virus : 1

Some perspective needed here, and less Panic creation from our beloved media wouldn't go amiss.

I know your a bit of a keyboard comedian Phil, but your perspective on this is part of the reason that the UK is set to be in a worse situation than Italy

  13. I agree with your prediction. All this Covid-19 panic is ballyhoo. This time next year there will be something else for the media to hype. Just think. On 20th January 2021 the newly elected President of the USA will be inaugurated. What will the world be like if that person is our mate Donny?

An attitude that flys in the face of the evidence and one that will hasten the spread.

Next year yours and my world is going to look very different
