  1. It is a shame that the inspection team could not inspect earlier. it would seem to me that it would be in the Russians/Syrians interest if there is nothing to see to get the inspectors in at the earliest opportunity.

I guess you are suggesting that shooting at the inspection team must have been done by locals to deter an inspection that might find no evidence. I can see a motive here BUT rationally there is also great motivation for Russia/Syria to create security concerns in order to deter or delay inspection. Why is it that Pearson Sharp was able to go in without being shot at but the inspection tream cannot ?

Russians were there on April 10......

  2. Actually, I thought it was the $4 for two biscuits that was the problem to start with..

Me too!. Paying 4 bucks (or should I say dollars in this thread...) for a 20 cent biscuit is MORE of an outrage!

I guess the poor cafe owners have to pay the extortionate lease somehow. What's the bet the landowners are foreign and $2 of that biscuit/cookie goes overseas? More outrage!

  3. On this subject at our local airport we now have to have a amber flashing light on our vehicles to drive 20 metres to our hangars hazard lights are not good enough I guess if we don't have the amber light maybe we are a terrorist or maybe it's for the blind old pilots taxiing aircraft without Amber lights running into us ,there has never been a problem to warrant this not even a close call while they were at it they also banned push bikes and dogs while council owned hangars have sheets of iron missing from the roof doors you can't slide and toilets leaking water all over the floor also a plague of rabbits burrowing under the concrete floors.

No money to fix the hangars.... it's all been spent on "safety"....

Hope the rabbits have their vests on..... and a "dig" permit.spacer.png

  4. Here's another example of overdone safety.. There is so much safety stuff on power tools these days that they are difficult to use. I reckon there is just so much you can put up with before you take the bloody guards off. This will make you liable for prosecution I guess but the job gets done.

Yes, lots of places now require the switch to turn off as soon as you let it go. This makes it difficult at times to angle the device and still keep your finger or thumb on the switch.

Your finger gets sore after a while and you can't hold it in a more secure manner relative to the angle of use, which in the end is counterproductive.

Yes, turning off automatically is good if you drop it but a good grip/grasp with your finger off the switch, reduces the chance of dropping it.

    Thinking of angle grinders here.....

  5. Some years ago, the company I was with tried to implement the DuPont Safety system (they gave it up as a failure inside 2 years).

I remember something about the "DuPont system". I think they had to close their own US (?) plants as they couldn't work to their own (strict) safety system.

I got the impression it was just an excuse to move operations to a 3rd world country........not sure......

  6. If that's the case you have a medical issue, and should get it checked before flying, or driving.

I don't believe I have a medical issue at all.

As SDQDI said. The new lights are a very fast flashing intense multicolour strobes. LED?

Put a couple of cop cars, an ambulance and yellow light flashing tow trucks on the side of the road at night and someone standing in front of them to direct traffic becomes a blur.....

  7. Industry is being strangled by safety here so much, projects are simply cancelled due to the cost.......which makes workers the fittest and healthiest......in the dole queue.

"Safety" has become such an "industry" and so many have jumped on the bandwagon we are legislating ourselves into a future 3rd world country.

  8. All new to me!

Los Angeles dumps 96 million plastic balls into a reservoir

City officials released 20,000 shade balls into the Los Angeles Reservoir Monday, the final step in a $34.5 million water quality protection project.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power project involved the release of 96 million shade balls into the reservoir at the Van Norman Complex in Sylmar.

"This is a blend of how engineering really meets common sense. We saved a lot of money, we did all the right things," said LADWP General Manager Marcie Edwards.

Los Angeles was the first city in the United States to use shade balls, which now cover three other reservoirs. The 4-inch balls are weighted down with water inside, which helps keep them in place to block out sunlight on the water's surface.

The black plastic shade balls, which are made in Los Angeles for 36 cents, protect the water against dust, rain, birds, wildlife and chemical reactions caused by the sun. It also helps keep the water in the reservoir from evaporating.

"By reducing evaporation, these shade balls will conserve 300 million gallons of water each year, instead of just evaporating into the sky. That's 300 million gallons to fight this drought," Mayor Eric Garcetti said.

Mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency to cover all reservoirs, initial estimates came in at $300 million to cover the 175-acre facility, but the shade balls cost less than $35 million. These major savings, both financially and environmentally, are setting Los Angeles ahead of the curve.

"While it's meeting the minimum standards, we want to go beyond that and have the healthiest water so we've been spreading these balls everywhere," Garcetti said.

City officials say shade balls last about 10 years. The LADWP says they will be removed, recycled and replaced.

  9. downunder of course was the man I was going to recommend....it's bound to be successful: you'll be in so much pain down there for the rest of your life, you'll never be able to perform again....

Well, I don't know if you're "on the ball" or if you "hit the nail on the head" with that one.

But I do know that even if santa still has presents in his sack, he won't be coming down the chimney no more.
